Discussion about
We are renting a house in the Poconos for a week or two. VRBO and Homeaway have quoted weekly prices, but what counts as a week? I've always thought a week is 7 nights, but a friend is telling me in house rentals, a week is 6 nights. I tried a google search and looked on VRBO and Homeaway for definitions, but no luck. Thanks in advance.
I haven't a clue who these agencies are, but a week rental is very often, and in my mind, 6 nights/7days. If it were 7 nights, then the rental would extend over 8 days and not make it possible to be rented every 7 days.
It is 7 nights and 8 days. For instance your first night is Saturday night, you then check out the following Saturday morning and someone else checks in for Saturday night. I have never heard of a 6 night week.
definitely seven nights. i don't use homeaway or vrbo, but most sites give a "changeover day" for each property, which is the day of the week you both arrive and leave.
I'm changing my answer. Mark this date in your calendars: I was wrong. As I think about this, when I've rented condos for a ski week or Carribean house with the family, we typically checked in on Saturday afternoon (say, after 4pm) and departed by 10am the following Saturday. That left the cleaning crew 6 hours to ready the place for the next guests. My truly final answer: 7nights/7.5 days=1 week. Apologies for the impulsive, wrong opinion.
kyle and others, thanks. Your logic is consistent with mine - check in in the afternoon or evening, check out is morning or noon, so 6 nights would be 6 days (including the two part-days as one full day) or even 5 days (counting full days only), not 7 days.
The specific situation is that a listing has a "per week" price quoted. I emailed about my dates, which are exactly 2 weeks (Saturday to Saturday). The guy replied with a quote that was significantly higher than what I thought the website said. I asked him why, he basically said "prices vary". My inclination is just not to rent from this guy, but my friend told me I was wrong and am asking for more than two "weeks", thus the higher price. This seemed strange to me, thus my question above.
Thanks again for the responses.
The price may be higher depending on the weeks you want. Some weeks are more popular, hence more expensive.
newbuyer--it is possible, as mc says, that the dates you are looking at are in a pricier timeframe--for example, some owners have higher rates for weeks in July and August than in June and Sept.
Also, if you are planning to arrive on an 'off-day', like Wednesday to Wednesday, for example, rather than the standard Sat-Sat, the owner may charge a bit extra for this as he won't be able to easily rent the house out for a shortened week in either end of your stay.
Another thing to keep in mind is that there are often fees added, such as cleaning fees and extra deposits if you have pets.
You should, though, feel free to negotiate with the owner. If you're doing two weeks, for example, you could ask for a discount .
He may also charge sales tax, if he runs his rental as a business.
Oh, sorry--I see you're doing a standard Sat-Sat rental. Frankly, in rereading your post, I'd take my business elsewhere if this guy's giving you a hard time. You do NOT want to be in a rental with a difficult owner. Things often go wrong (backed up tub, leaky toilet, whatever) and you need the owner to be responsive and personable.
And then there's the bogus cleaning/damage charge when you're all done.
