Discussion about
Who knows anything about Dumbo? neighborhood? restaurants/cafes/bars? how is it for families/children? schools? how does it compare to brooklyn heights and the surrounding area?
Tiny neighborhood. Mostly condos, some high-rises, and a good amount in converted industrial buildings. Pricey by Brooklyn standards, but I think mostly because of the condo mix. Some really nice high-end boutiques. Not too much in the way of food, but that's mostly because it's such a small area. Can feel quite nichey as a result. Major issues are lack of train access (you've really only got the F, but people do brave the walk to the A/C), and the noise from the bridges and nearby BQE (triple-paned windows are worth looking into if they're not already installed).
I know there's talk of building a school on Dock St, not sure how much progress has been made on that front. Overall quite different from Brooklyn Heights, so worth exploring on your own to gauge where your preferences lie. Maybe worth reading some of this thread: http://streeteasy.com/nyc/talk/discussion/4396-dumbo-worse-off-than-other-areas-of-brooklyn
kids <> dumbo.....
yuppie/trust fund baby/etc who wants a batchelor pad with major views = dumbo
One aspect of dumbo that turns me off is the proximity to the projects. you frequently see packs of teens wandering around, with the occasional chained pit bull, I don;t know what the crime statistics are there.
Dumbo has better public schools than brooklyn heights I believe. It's a great area. I was never a big fan of Dumbo due to the noise from the trains but after spending some time in the park, it doesn't bother me as much. I'm over the noise now, and it's pretty much a non-issue for me regarding the outside park area.
