Discussion about
Do members of the COOP board pay maintenance? I know that it is a voluntary position but do they receive any sort of additional benefits?

except for ego boosts and kickbacks, they do not receive any comp.

not paying maintenance would not be considered a voluntary position, but a paid one.

Of course we pay maintenance.

Where did you get the idea we didn't?

Yes: ego boosts and kickbacks...sure. All board members can't wait to assume risks of criminal liability by stealing from the coop they serve. Lots of kickbacks-er, or is that just what some people think if they say enough will be believed? Do you know how many prosecutions there were in NYC last year for illegal kickbacks to board members? Uh...maybe none? And what else do board members get along with the supposed power trips? Evenings gone dealing with sexy issues like building refinancing, decisions on how to fund a necessary capital expenditure with the least pain for the shareholders while still preserving value, excitement of reviewing 1000s of pages of applications a year from prospective purchasers, responding to the handful of lunatics present in every building, being stopped in the elevators and halls constantly to answer questions and field suggestions, sitting with accountants going over financials that would bore any sentient being to death, ... ah, the list of pleasures goes on.

I for one am grateful for the service my board members volunteer for, for the incredible diversity of talents they contribute (law, accounting, engineering, finance, management), and for the consistent, conservative, and thoughtful way they have guided my coop. On occasion in the past I've acted as a sort of "of counsel" to boards, but have not mustered the stomach for the work being on the board as a member would require. In my old building a particular board (mostly of young-bloods in the building) had control for 2 years and nearly destroyed the place so I organized a coup of sorts to stop their nonsense and restore sanity. But even given the disconcerting actions of that board and the need for a more conservative, wise direction for the coop, I couldn't get myself to run for the board--it is a THANKLESS miserable time-sucking CHORE. The vast majority of people who serve on the board of any 1/2-decent coop should be applauded. And the fact that most operate well is evidenced by the fact that people continue to by into their coops.

Basically, totally agree with Kyle (except for one board member who thinks he is a gift of god). However, whenever I think "don't know if the lobby renovation is that great" I totally pull back and think "thank god for all the board members making these decisions and taking all the flack."
