Electric Stove?

Discussion about
My wife and I are considering a coop unit that would suit most of our needs. The apartment had a very nice reno done a few years ago and is spacious and thoughtfully laid out. However, I noticed that the kitchen had an electric oven/stove. Apparently the building (a conversion) does not have, and will never have, a gas line. I have always heard terrible things about electric stoves. I am curious what peoples' thoughts are on the quality of electric stoves as well as its effect on potential resale value. Thanks. Colgin

Gas stoves have the obviously advantage that you can vary the heat instantly, and they are far more efficient than electric. Having said that, there have been some very important developments in electric cooking lately. Induction cook tops are at least twice as energy efficient as traditional electric. They also don't waste heat in the transfer as with traditional electric and gas. The cooking surface also doesn't get as hot or rather stay hot as long. The downside is that they are not widely available from many appliance manufacturers and they only work with ferromagnetic pans, not aluminum, stainless or many others.

But the bottom line is that developments such as induction cooking will likely improve the notion of cooking with electric and therefore not be a drag on value.

There are many high-end electric ranges and cooktops available that look spectacular. True, many people prefer a gas cooktop, but a top-notch electric one with bells and whistles and sleek looks may win many people over. Just because it's electric doesn't mean you have to settle for those hideous 1970's open coils. And with ovens, electric is actually preferable to gas because it gives a more even heat and works well with convection, so don't sweat that. Check out any appliance dealer for models (like PC Richard, or Gringer)

I know this was eight years ago, but would you please share the address of the building? I am specifically looking for apartment buildings in NYC that have electric stoves, NOT gas. Thank you!
