Discussion about
A very experienced, friendly and polite P.C. Richard repairman replaced my refrigerator compressor this afternoon. Within 15 minutes he was done with the job. $242.00 (service call and part).
I concur, but from a purchase perspective. Good experience all around.
Lucy: My fridge went warm on Thursday night.
I called and got a repairman sent today (Sat.)
Luckily I don't cook at home and didn't have to discard frozen meats, other costly foods, all that.
But I need to keep my supply of Newman's iced teas, fresh fruits and my yogurts nice and frosty.
No warranty, and even if I had one, it would be expired by now.
So an appliance store fixed your appliance?
What's the point?
Don't knock it, columbiacounty. At least we got to hear from Truth, about Truth. That's enough for me. Appliance store fixes Truth's appliance: gravy!
How old was the fridge? If you bought it at P.C. Richards and it conked out in less than 10 years I wouldn't be so happy. The one thing I don't like about Richards is that you have to haggle about the price.
I bought a new GE fridge from PC Richard in April. The compressor died one month later in May. I called them and they had a repairman sent over 3 days later! He said, "You need a new compressor, I'll have to order it for you, they'll call you when it comes in." 3 days later I received a call from PC Richard "The compressor is in. Let's schedule an appointment for you." I said, "Great, what time today is the repairman coming over? I've eaten takeout for close to a week now." PC Richard said, "I can send someone there in 3 days." Total time from report of problem to fixing of problem = 9 days. That's 9 days with no refrigerator, no offer of a replacement ("we can't do that", said PC Richard), and no apologies. Can someone recommend a better appliance dealer for apartments? This was the most awful experience and I will never shop there again!
Sounds like buying the G.E. refrigerator was the big mistake here. I've had better experience with Kitchen Aide. I think you are too harsh on PC Richards. They can't order a part before knowing the problem. But once you knew it was the compressor why not schedule service and order the part. The big risk is that the part doesn't arrive in time but then you can always move the appointment. This could've been fixed in under a week.
I think he's complaining about paying $800/hr for a blue collar service call.
First month, it's all under warranty.
Buying a fridge at PC Richards has permanently changed my life, and not for the better. This story is five years old but I'm glad to relate it now.
I purchased a new Frigidaire from PC Richards and it was delivered a few days later. The delivery men badly scratched my mahogany living room floor in the process and dumped my old refrigerator in our building's basement instead of carting it away. After they left, I realized that they had brought me a fridge that opened from the left and had to make arrangements to have a replacement made.
When the replacement was installed, I didn't notice that the delivery crew failed to adjust it for the door to close automatically. I subsequently prepared a breakfast which included cold cereal with milk. An hour later the room started spinning violently. I somehow made it to a bathroom and spent the next eight hours emptying myself at both ends. When my wife arrived from work, I asked her to call an ambulance.
The following three days were spent in a hospital for viral food poisoning The next half-year was spent visiting an ENT and going for therapy for vertigo because the infection also attacked my right and inner ear. My ENT brought my word recognition from six percent to eighty percent. He termed my recovery as "near miraculous" and said he would be discussing my case at a conference he was soon to attend in Singapore. His aggressive treatment involved direct injections of steroids through my eardrum.
I hope this abridged story is helpful to you. Needless to say, I wouldn't take a product from PC Richards if they gave it to me.
RealEstateNY: Bought it there, 12 years ago. Never had a problem,
When I called the service dept. they asked what was wrong with it. I told them there was warm air.
They told me it's probably the compressor and when the repairman arrived (on time, within 48 hrs.)
he had the part with him.
dealboy: The service call is $139.99. the compressor brought the total to $242.00 The repairman vacced the entire exterior in the back and the vents and all. He wiped it all down with Fantastic before pushing it back into place.
Riversider: The fridge is an Amana. A big fridge, freezer on the bottom type.
rmrm: Sorry to hear that. I don't know of a fridge repair service that would show up on the weekend.
Or within a couple of days. Or would have fixed it for less.
For what it's worth, in just the past week I've heard from friends whose GE fridges died on them ... one was less than 3 months old, the other only TEN DAYS old.
Knock wood, I've never had a problem with my Frigidaire (got it brand-new in the gut reno in '06).
Matt: We both seem to have good luck with our appliances.
The repairman marveled at my Sony. Got it at The Wiz.
OOoooooh! The Wiz!!!
That's another piece of Old New York that I miss!
I got my 25-inch Sanyo "portable" color TV from The Wiz in '95, Union Square location. Still going strong!
I dont thinK GE is the problem, many of my clients have purchased the GE profile and monogram and not one has had a problem with them.
I use Andre at Paul's Appliances in Newark on every project. They are great 973-465-0387
Well, there we go:
I didn't think to ask Primer. But now we all have a good reco. That's what these discussion threads are for (the loser trolls are not).
I had a good experience with P.C. Richard. If they didn't ask me what was wrong -- I would have told them. And would have asked that the repairman arrive with the part(s).
No matter how long you need to wait for a fridge repair:
Get a picnic cooler and fill it with:
ICE, ICE, baby...
(from your local, nearest Dag or whatever. I filled mine with ice from the La Baguette and they gave it to me for free. I'm a regular customer there.).
If you know anybody who lives in an apt./house in Europe; you know that the fridges are small. Some don't even have a freezer. Shop for what you need, for that day/dinner.
We stock up here, because we have big fridges.
Matt: Mine is the same vintage. Sony. 32 inch.
We will see whose goes first.
Primer: It's Sunday: Day of rest!!!
What a surprise, a thread that recommends an appliance repair store manages to get the ire of columbiacounty. What happened this weekend columbia, one of the chickens went missing? A pig made its way out of the pen? One of your old firm's partners called and inadvertently made you feel like a career, financial and family loser?
Ire?
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/ire
ire, rage, fury - Ire suggests greater intensity than anger, rage suggests loss of self-control, and fury is destructive rage verging on madness.

Let me know if you need help with pronunciation.
I bought a new refrigerator (LG) from PC Richard in April after my 10 year old Frigidaire started burning while I was away on vacation. Luckily a neighbor smelled smoke and my building manager and handy man came up and found the problem and unplugged the old refrigerator. Long story short: came home late Friday night from vacation, went to PC Richard on Saturday, and had new refrigerator installed on Tuesday (they would have installed in on Monday, but my co-op needs insurance certificates). New refrigerator works fine.
Three weeks ago, my mom's old washing machine died, I called PC Richard same afternoon to order a new washer, and had it delivered next morning (OK-they did goof and forget to send the hoses--they returned next day to hook up). Washer works fine.
I'm very happy with PC Richard!
unPC: That's horrible! I don't know how you followed up with P.C. Richards but a letter to the top guy in their office would have gotten some attention from them.
It's also good to check appliances when they are delivered to make sure that you received what you ordered and it's in good working condition.
Andre at Paul's appliances. Now we know who to call/do business with.
ellenost: Is 10 years the usual life-expectancy of fridges/compressors? My fridge still looks like new inside and out.
I don't use it as much as most people use their fridges. Although in the summer on really hot days when I get home, as I'm waiting for the ac to chill, I open the door for a quick blast.
I guess we got lucky and perhaps the delivery/repair guys can get to people sooner than others if they are close by in the neighborhood.
huntersburg: LOL!
Truth: ROTFL!
siuya!
vucsa!
Well, I feel as though I must stick up for GE refrigerators. My current one is 15 years old and has never required a service call. I bought the same side by side a few years ago for our other house and it's in perfect condition. We've bought them for the offspring and all are still going strong. I would never buy any other brand.
But PC Richard? Sorry, not so much. We've never had a good experience at that store. Lately, we've been buying appliances at Home Depot, with free delivery and installation. If you buy a GE appliance from the GE website, you also get free delivery and installation and you can get a pretty good price if you hit a sale.
Any recommendation for an icebox repairman in columbiacounty?
general: We now have another alternative to P.C. Richard for purchasing: Home Depot. and the GE website.
We're here to exchange info and experiences.
Except for the troll, alanhart.
He's just on this thread to troll with nothing to offer by way of info and/or suggestions.
"about 5 hours ago": My friend's 10-year-old son was here with her.
His summer project is to write a report about bullies.
He asked "to use my "Truth" log-on to respond to that bully alanhart."
We said :" O.K. just make up a comment in response. Any comment, series of letters will do".
What you see above is the cyberspace streeteasy bully, alanhart; bullying a ten-year-old boy. "vucsa!"
The kid would have continued that exchange but he's 10-years-old. He has better things to do.
Right on, Truth! You go, girl!!!
Within a minute of my posting that comment: Here's alanhart with another of his useless, bully "comments".
7/11/11 920P
"vucsa!"
i'm sorry truth, but that's hilarious. alan! you kill me!
lucille: It's hilarious alright: alanhart in bully-response mode.
With a ten-year-old boy.
One username -- multiple personalities?
Just a ten-year-old boy, using my log-in.
He's been busy for hours, now. Not interested in dueling comments with a man who is at least 50 years older, but not smarter than him.
alangarbagehart. He's so proud of his foolishness.
You must be 13 years or older to use this site.
How does he feel about p.c. Richards.?
Ooops, my ice pick broke. They don't make them like they used to. Velda, call Elmer at the Columbia County Ice Box and Ice Pick company and see if they can send one over on tomorrow's Wells Fargo Wagon.
So...truth
You admit to encouraging an underage minor to partipate here?
And that's who's fault?
Truth, stick with overage minors in the future.
huntersburg: LOL! A 13-year-old has more going on in his life than the socially inept CC and alanhart.
Probably more than one 13-year-old, Truth, probably more than one.
Within a minute: alanhart. Back again.
He has no place to go, nothing to do.
Truth: sorry, but I don't know the life expectancy of a refrigerator. The woman from whom I bought my apartment 4 years ago had done a simple (inexpensive) renovation back in 2001. She bought a basic 18 cubic feet top freezer Frigidaire refrigerator. In my former rental apartment, I had a GE top freezer refrigerator that was still working fine after 15 years (never needed service). Think the problem was that Frigidaire may not have been a good unit. Never read about anyone renovating an apartment proudly announcing that they have Fridgidaire appliances. Hope I have better luck with my new LG French door refrigerator. Hope I won't need any service from PC Richard anytime soon based on the above reports.
ellenost: My fridge is now good as new.
If anything happens again, I'm calling Andre at Paul's appliances.
Have a nice weekend!
I highly recommend Paul's appliances too. I used Domonick and he was great. He made sure he sent me the rebate forms with copies of receipts and told about extended warranties for additional four years. The service was great and appliances arrived when scheduled.
"sorry, but I don't know the life expectancy of a refrigerator."
20 years.
Now you know.
p.c. richard delivered a refrigerator for me about ten years ago. in doing so they rammed the sucker so hard against a stove knob that they damaged the gas line. the gas smell led me to call con ed, who told me it was a miracle the place hadn't blown up.
"p.c. richard delivered a refrigerator for me about ten years ago."
This was PC himself, or one of his sons who did the delivery?
i wont deal with pc richard's...they are often "sold out" of their advertised specials and try to steer you into non-sale items, the price of which has to be negotiated on the spot...not how i like to shop
"sorry, but I don't know the life expectancy of a refrigerator."
20 years.
Now you know."
Thanks for the info. So it seems my Frigidaire unit was a "lemon" after all. Good thing it didn't burn down my apartment.
The United States of America Internal Revenue Service says the life expectancy of a refrigerator is five years. Now you know.
this isn't what you guys are talking about, but i wanted to share this. i have friends out here who recently redid their kitchen by just refinishing/refurbishing their old kitchen. it used to look kind of like the before kitchen here, but with cabinetry that fir around the fridge
http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/la/wallpaper-graphics/diy-wallpapering-a-fridge-020003
and now it very much has the feel of this. crip shiny white cabinets and shiny red appliances. the counter is black and floor has big black tiles.
http://3rings.designerpages.com/2010/09/08/get-your-paint-bucket-fill-with-a-colorful-summit-appliance/
it looks really really cool and they did the work themselves. they did it right, researched the techniques, go a lot of helpful advice from the people ar home depot, and it looks amazing.
the backsplash is solid piece of something white.
the spray painted the appliances with what google calls Porcelain Refinishing.
Like the bathtub kind?
maybe. it's shiny.
oh and to bring it back to the discussion, their fridge is an ancient electrolux.
I thought I'd have better luck with the Sears extended warranty for my mother's 11 year refrigerator, but I called for service, and they told me that the earliest appointment is 10 days from now. Definitely won't buy from Sears again. If my mother's refrigerator needs to be replaced, I'm ordering from PC Richard.
I just got appliances from PC Richards next day delivery and had to exchane my stackable for an all in one combo again next day, no problems.
