Hard to believe, but I found it: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/28/greathomesanddestinations/in-cappadocia-returning-to-the-cave-on-location.html My favorite quote in the article: "Many of these were absolute ruins...." Really? You don't say? I don't even care about the stainless-steel fridge: vacuuming the limestone off the walls is a never-ending task, and I don't have that many bags.

Backwards: I live at 52nd between Broadway and Eighth. Though 9th is nice enough - plenty of good restaurants.

"and actually living in Spanish-speaking countries."

So did I.

"about speaking it since childhood"

I know plenty of people who have spoken a language since childhood who don't know a goddamned thing about it. Picking a language up off the street is a far cry from having a formal education. You're just one more case - a sad one, at that.

To wit: keep on going! Someday I'll learn what - that in the Dominican Republic they say "plica" instead of "explica"? If that's what you meant - which it wasn't, given the context of what you wrote - they you would be wrong. The ignorant in the Dominican Republic - the ones you must've been hanging around - might say that, but the well-educated don't.

And you're also wrong about French: the future is used in French to denote an unknown circumstance, just like in all other Romance languages. Although sometimes the future is used for our future, future actions are very often stated in the present tense:

http://www.french-linguistics.co.uk/grammar/future_tense_usage.shtml

The future is even less commonly used in Spanish, where "ir a + infinitive" is used; in Portuguese it's "ir + infinitive." Sorry. It's just a fact.

Why you keep on going on and on and on trying to prove yourself right when you are so plainly wrong is beyond me. You seem to be deeply insecure.

but stevejhx: You still can't understand Yiddish.

Only Riversider and I know the exact translation of what I just wrote.
We've spoken it since childhood, heard and learned it in our homes spoken by family.
Know it very well. Better than you could ever learn it by way of a formal education.
That goes to bjw's point.

"I live at 52nd between Broadway and Eighth."

I don't really care. Unlike you, I don't think where someone chooses to live lessens their argument any. I'll go by the actual validity of the argument. But I guess that's what you have to resort to when you don't have much else to lean on.

"So did I."

Great, so it's not just your "turf" as you so pompously declared.

"I know plenty of people who have spoken a language since childhood who don't know a goddamned thing about it. Picking a language up off the street is a far cry from having a formal education."

So condescending. I learned it at home and studied in school, right through college. So I have both. Sorry, again.

"If that's what you meant - which it wasn't"

No, it couldn't have been. You know what I mean better than I do! Except that the only other person who seems to even care about this understood what I meant, whereas you're trying to distort it. You're just wrong. It was perfectly fine.

"The ignorant in the Dominican Republic - the ones you must've been hanging around"

Jesus, how arrogant are you? What people actually speak is easily as acceptable as whatever you claim to speak. You really need to get out more.

"And you're also wrong about French"

No. I mean, this gets better by the minute. French uses the future tense all the time. In the way we do. Un jour, tu l'apprendras. But please, post another British website to explain French to a French person. Hilarious.

"The future is even less commonly used in Spanish, where "ir a + infinitive" is used"

Same construction is used in French. But that don't mean the future tense is not common.

Yup, Truth, I still can't speak Yiddish. (Except for the few choice words....)

"I learned it at home and studied in school, right through college.

You must've missed a lesson or two, judging by your claims.

"You really need to get out more."

I've already been to about 40 countries and just got back from two weeks in Italy. Where else would you have me visit?

Brooklyn?

"But please, post another British website to explain French to a French person."

Hmm. Now you're not only "part Argie," but French, too, with friends and family who speak Italian which of course makes you an expert at that, too.

You get broader and broader - and less and less believable - with every post. You should just come to terms with your own limitations like us sane people, and be done with it.

Really, you'll be much happier, I guarantee it. You seem to be puffing yourself up, trying to get us to believe you're something that you're not. Look, I don't go around claiming to be a doctor, or even to have remotely the knowledge to do much beyond apply a band-aid. So okay, cool, you can order a Pepsi in Santo Domingo. Yay! Yay! But you're insisting that you know things that you don't, that you are things that you aren't. You're Argentine and French and Italian, and I wouldn't doubt it if there's some Twirling Dervishes in your claimed background, as well. But stick to things that you know about - you'll look far less foolish to those of us who are discussing our careers for the past 20 years.

Not just high-school French, and a family friend from Leghorn.

I think when people say that the future tense is not common in Spanish they don't mean that it is never used to the extent of being obscure.....but that for zillions of common everyday uses people much more often use the ir + infinitive construction, or the simple present tense. It is fairly rare to hear "ire", for example.

That's right, bb: "Voy a tu casa mañana" means "I'll go to your house tomorrow."

Rather than, "Iré cuando quiera," which means "I'll go whenever I want to."

The problem with bjw is s/he is so ignorant that s/he doesn't know how much s/he doesn't know. I work in these languages on a daily basis and have for 20 years; I read MILLIONS of words a year in Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian. I know an enormous number of words and phrases and grammar and the like, and there are still things that I have to look up, such as, just today, "cachola," which though it is in monolingual dictionaries is not in any bilingual dictionary anywhere.

bjw has NO IDEA how much there is to know and learn, and just 'cause mommy and/or daddy was from Argentina and bjw might have learned how to say pablum in Buenos Aires doesn't mean s/he could even come close to doing what I do.

S/he calls me "arrogant" - nope! I just know what I'm talking about. bjw doesn't.

"You must've missed a lesson or two, judging by your claims."

Good one. But you're still wrong.

"I've already been to about 40 countries and just got back from two weeks in Italy. Where else would you have me visit?"

Maybe you're spending too much time in the hotel room?

"Hmm. Now you're not only "part Argie," but French, too, with friends and family who speak Italian which of course makes you an expert at that, too."

Yes, all correct.

"You get broader and broader - and less and less believable - with every post."

You don't have to believe me. I don't know why it's so unfathomable that someone might grow up in a trilingual household. It happens all the time, all over the world. I'm sure there are kids in Switzerland, for example, who have me beat. But no one could possibly know more than you I guess.

"But you're insisting that you know things that you don't, that you are things that you aren't. You're Argentine and French and Italian"

I'm not actually Italian (as far as I know). I only studied it. It does come pretty easily to people who are fluent in French and Spanish though.

"You seem to be puffing yourself up, trying to get us to believe you're something that you're not."

No puffing. This is who I am. But this is coming from the guy who has to tell us about the "oodles of dough" he makes. Talk about puffing!

"But stick to things that you know about - you'll look far less foolish to those of us who are discussing our careers for the past 20 years."

I do know these things! And I've been speaking these languages longer than your career's been around, apparently. Shucks.

"I read MILLIONS of words a year in Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian"

Great. I read millions of words in other languages too. Congrats. You are not as unique and gifted as you think you are.

Actually, bjw, I also know that you're a charlatan, who has no idea how much you don't know. I don't believe a word of what you're saying, because none of it makes sense.

"I'm sure there are kids in Switzerland, for example, who have me beat."

The Swiss people I've met - including when I worked there, and the few I've dated - only spoke one language.

"I read millions of words in other languages too."

Really? Then you must spend every waking moment doing it - because I do.

I am very bit as unique and gifted as I think I am. I also know my limitations.

You don't.

You're just a charlatan, puffing yourself up. This is what I do for a living. From what I can tell, you're a housewife in Lower Slobovia, Kings County.

A person with all the talent that you claim to have certainly should be living in Trump Towers, no?

"Someday you'll learn" in the English context introduced above in this thread was not general; it was specific to "Someday you'll learn how to speak [choose your language]" or "Someday you'll learn how to translate" or perhaps "Someday you'll learn that I'm smarter than you." Whichever door you pick, the user was not being all that general. Besides, how could anyone say "someday you'll learn" without referring to anything at all? "Someday you'll learn something"? Even that is somewhat specific.

I vote for "lo." My authority is stevejhx.

Love the cavehouse, lowery!

bjw, you are typical of so many I've dealt with over the years. You can be sniffed out for miles as incompetent. I've even heard, "My nanny spoke French to me...."

I deal with these things every day. You sit in Brooklyn, investing in LinkedIn at $9 billion. Why with all these skills that you claim to have, don't you do something with them. Because everyone I know who has the skills that you claim to have is making a motherf... fortune.

"Besides, how could anyone say "someday you'll learn" without referring to anything at all?"

Well, lowery, I guess ... someday you'll learn.

"I vote for "lo.""

Indeed.

"bjw, you are typical of so many I've dealt with over the years. You can be sniffed out for miles as incompetent. I've even heard, "My nanny spoke French to me....""

Like I said, you don't have to believe me. I've actually referenced my Frenchness on here at other times, but if you feel my background is an impossibility, go on living in ignorant bliss, as I said.

"Why with all these skills that you claim to have, don't you do something with them. Because everyone I know who has the skills that you claim to have is making a motherf... fortune."

I do work, Steve. I don't know what other skills you think I have claimed to have on here, but would be great to hear your thoughts... I'm not the wealthiest guy in the world, but I do ok. Besides, I don't know too many people who've made a "motherf... fortune" translating words. I mean, I'm sure it pays ok, but by your own definition of success, why aren't you living in Trump Towers (gag)? On top of that (and I only speak for myself here), I don't find translation to be particularly gratifying work. I know it's got its little challenges here and there, but by and large, I'd probably be bored fairly quickly.

I've been on concert tours that went to countries where we met and spoke to the locals and learned a few words from them.
And I've been working on tours for more than 20 years.

I know some people who have been making a mother-lode of money -- but not by working as a translator.

Yes, we all refer to our Frenchness from time to time, don't we? I always did back when I was living in Levittown. Because you see, O Mighty BJW, I embrace my humble background, even though my alcoholic great-grandmother was a Vanderbilt, I can trace my Italian ancestry back to about 1480, and my last name in Ireland is associated with kings.

Me - I was born in Queens.

I didn't say that you had to work as a translator. In fact, most translators don't make a lot of money, because they're not good at it. Because what they fail to understand is good translators are good not because of the languages they speak, but because of the subjects they know about.

The language part of it is only an aid - the better you know it, the faster the work goes. What matters is the subject matter.

"Because what they fail to understand is good translators are good not because of the languages they speak, but because of the subjects they know about."

Sure, but nothing that we've been discussing here is really particular to any specific subject matter. And do you do a lot of Italian translations about bathroom fixtures?

¡Otra vez con lo mismo!

So what, you're French?! Whoopdee doo! My last name - which you know so well - is also Norman, aka French, and another (alcoholic) great-great grandmother's last name was Hazzard, which is about as French as it comes. And half of my Sicilian ancestors are ethnic Albanians.

This is what kills me about you Argentines, and why I brought up the subject. It means nothing to me that you're French, or that anybody else is French, or that you were raised speaking 3 languages, or none.

People are what they accomplish, not whom their ancestors slept with, or what slice of geography they might have been born in. I have far more respect for a humble illiterate peasant - and I've known many in my life, from Central America - than I do for you, with your "ma je suis francais" crap.

Really, bjw - it's time you got over yourself. You're really nothing but a tiny little person who lives in a two-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn. That's it. Nothing else.

You know, I met a Hapsburg once. Working as a clerk at Bank of America in Madrid.

That's how much "je suis francais" is worth to me.

Nothing. You're really nothing more than a haughty little Brooklynite trying to make themselves feel important by saying, "mais je suis francais."

Who cares, but you?

"It means nothing to me that you're French, or that anybody else is French, or that you were raised speaking 3 languages, or none."

It shouldn't really. But when you're incorrectly trying to correct my French and then proclaim that I'm lying because you can't admit being wrong, it does factor into the conversation. No more, no less.

"with your "ma je suis francais" crap."

Your French really is bad, huh?

"Really, bjw - it's time you got over yourself. You're really nothing but a tiny little person who lives in a two-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn. That's it. Nothing else."

Sorry, where did I claim to be a superior being or anything? I'm no more special or important than you are. Find me where I made these grand claims, and you can start talking about putting me in place or something. But otherwise, this little outburst of yours is weird and misplaced. It's taken a while, but I have finally figured out the bjw psyche! Sad and lonely as it is, bjw gains his/her self worth by fantasizing about how special it makes him/her because s/he is FRENCH.

OMG. Tremble at the thought. FRENCH! Imagine that! Wow. Wish I could do that.

It does, however, explain bjw's macabre fascination trying to prove me and WB wrong all the time - not knowing anything about anything, s/he tries to attack those of us who do.

Never been to Naples, but my ancestors came to the US from Sicily by steamboat called Santa Ana that left from the port of Naples. They didn't have shower heads. They didn't have enough money to worry about that. Really all they wanted to do was to eat.

I don't have the skill to translate into Italian. Only into English and Spanish.

Enough of you. Begone.

Well apparently if you commit a crime and announce that crime on streeteasy, that is not a "greyable" offense. Apt23 said that she called the police and reported that her husband was buying an illegal gun in order to menace (or worse)one of the neighbors. Problem for apt23 (and to the fortune of the husband) was that this was not occurring and the husband was doing no such thing - and therefore apt23 made false statements regarding a crime to the police, which itself is a crime. And she stated it on streeteasy.

Not to mention that basically all the time, 80% of your handiwork gets ignored, in that, generally, people tend to only read one of the languages in the manual (present company excluded, no doubt).

Actually, if you assume that the starting language doesn't need to be translated, duh, then there are four translation jobs done for each manual. Now, the appliance user will, generally speaking, only read one of the languages, in which case I guess you could argue that only 3/4 or 75% of the handiwork is ignored, not 80% as I stated above.

this board has meant a great deal to me, and I've made numerous friends as a result of it. I'm confident they'll remain friends, and for that I'm extremely grateful. NYC real estate is obviously a topic that fascinates me (believe me, nobody looks at as many comps as I do without being obsessed with the topic).

this has been destructive for awhile, but I was loath (that fighting Irish spirit) to let the trolls win. I no longer care. any victory seems destined to be a pyrrhic one at this point. but the bottom line is that this is just no longer interesting or fun. so what have I been fighting to keep going?

I'm not going off in a huff, and this may seem melodramatic, but like many others I find se more than a bit addictive. this public farewell hopefully will provide me with the incentive to stay off the board. if I don't feel free to heap abuse upon me!

sls: I have never used bad language before on SE and I have never said anything, ANYTHING, derisive about anybody......but let me just say-- please go back and read what SE wrote, what I wrote and your response. You are Acluistic and you attack people personally. This is not the first time you have personally --and erroneously -- come after me. You are an arrogant, condescending asshole. But since I am finished with SE, it no longer matters.

aboutready, grey due to making racist remarks and alanfart, grey due to collecting racist cards; they are both too old to have no control of their foul mouths and ignorance. MoldtownerEast, stop hatin' on me, as Truth said I have more class than the bully get along gang members which includes you.

I say just have those folks post here. The "I talked to someone who thinks..." stuff is usually crap.

mutombo:
Those days are gone. You can post on se now without getting hate from the bully gang members.
They are defunct.

I don't know what/who lowery's comment refers to.
But lowery has never bullied any commenter on se that I know of.
So, possibly lowery refers to him/herself.
I think that lowery has some best friends and they are smart.
My guess is that lowery works at Lincoln Center,and/or is a professor at Julliard.
lowery cares about music and students learning to play instruments in the schools.
And that's a good thing.

If this comment posts twice -- it's the iPad.

columbiacounty, I'm not sure anyone understands your posts. Are you trying to defend aboutready or disparage Truth? Because I think that the decision was made exactly 12 months ago on July 31:

lowery's comment refers to the fact that arguing about who is smarter than whom is not very fun, and this thread was more interesting when it discussed the pros and cons of paying $100K to renovate a cavehouse that cost only $13K, and how it compares with LIC, which is not such a bad place, but that cavehouse, also not a bad place, appeals to him more, because it's prettier and might have good beaches nearby

people, can't we get along? who said that?
