Discussion about
Has anyone ever had mold in their apartments or specifically their air conditioner. I wanted to do know if management did anything about it. I was told their was no mold by management and then I went and paid for my own test and there most certainly mold - 2 kinds but not black mold. It's been making my child sick every morning and then it goes away during the day. Thanks

Are you a tenant or owner?

I've had two experiences with rentals. I recently saw mold in my elderly aunt's apartment. Sent the LL a letter, talked to him by phone when he didn't answer. It took about two months, but they removed the mold and are now looking for the cause.

In my son's apartment, the LL refused to remove mold which occurred after upstairs tenant left the bathtub running (and LL wouldn't enter upstairs apartment for almost a month). There were yards of mold on the ceiling under the upstairs bathroom. After more than adequate notice to LL, including photos, the LL said we were responsible. My son went to court and got an order to fix the mold and the upstairs tenant's apartment (plus all the other things the LL had refused to fix in his apartment).

I am a tenant. They installed the air conditioner. It has taken me quite awhile to get management to answer about other issues. It was also newly renovated apparently. I am trying to get the renovation date. The manager is coming over today because once I said I had mold and they had wrongly tested for mold - they actually just came up and said "NO MOLD" No samples were taken - they are running here now. I'm not sure if I need to secure an environmental attorney. I really do not want to go that route. I know they will fix it but we have lived with this for almost a year now with sickness and health issues. I tried to do this the easy way, but obviously that didn't work. I was wondering if I was entitled to some rent back etc bc of the health issues.

I can't believe they wouldn't fix it. That's absurd.

I don't think you're entitled to rent back. If you think the apt is making you sick and you have children there, move. It sounds like the end of your lease is probably approaching anyway.

I don't want to move. They should have tested properly though. It was a joke. I've already taken my daughter out of the room. I'll see what they say today.

Oh and there are quite a lot of other issues as well which I won't go into. I don't think the apt was ever inspected after renovation and that it was renovated on the quick.

ccc, you're still in that East Side rental, right?

I think a lot of tenants are getting -- well, poor treatment is too strong a phrase, but maybe "hasty treatment" because vacancies are so low and the rental market is so tight. Just start with the manager today, and explain what's wrong, and be pleasant and firm and not whiny (as I know you are) and then stay on him.

if you are certain the apt is making your child sick every morning, why would you do anything but move immediately?

Thanks FP - I have been very polite. Not my manner to be mean. I explained everything in basic terms. I am certain they will replace the AC. I just opened it up and it's corroded. Can email you? You can give me some tips. I don't want to post all the info on here - a public website. I'm not in Rivergate anymore. The renovations there were fine. This is the new place. I think they pretty much know there are problems. The paint is peeling - wrong paint used. Sheet rock showing with dust etc - lots of issues including bursting pipes which should have been replaced during the renovation since the rent was raised substantially following renovation. As I said, I don't and didn't want to go the legal route. Let me feel out how they react today. I'm happy the manager is finally just coming up instead of maintenance. That's a big move imho. In the past they just told me to wash my filter. They don't want these issues in the press.

Does anyone know if there is legally supposed to be a walk through prior to moving in or an inspection following renovations?

i'd test for lead given what you describe--seriously--not good for children

if your ac is corroded, it was likely not installed to drain properly, or has a clogged drainplug

thanks. I hope there isn't lead but if I need to test I'll test. It's only on one windowsill in the kitchen but it just sucks. Nothing ever works out right for me.
