If she isn't concerned about supporting a immediate neighborhood store, and she's price sensitive, there is a very good ophthalmologist who gives eye exams for $85 at the Costco Warehouse store (East Harlem @ East River & E 117th St) with no waiting when booked ahead daytimes during the week. They also sell glasses at favorable terms but you have to pick them up in a couple weeks after buying--they won't send them to you. You don't need a Costco Warehouse membership to see the doctor, but you might need a $50 membership card to buy lenses. Call ahead to confirm.

The real cost of Costco isn't the $50 membership. It's the $300 you spend every time you walk in there for $100 worth of something because the prices are just so darned good!

My husband got a great pair of glasses from The Eye Man. The woman helping us really knew her stuff and brought out a pair that was perfect for him. Will definitely return.

Of course, there's also Cohen's, where I generally go to get cheap refills.

I second Westside Opticians on 86th and Columbus - good eye care, frame selection and professional attitude. Not sure if Dr. Stuart Blankman on 92nd and B'way is any good as an optometrist, but his window displays are sometimes pretty cool to look at.

The real cost of Costco is the money you can spend elsewhere on non-perishables and get better prices, especially online.
