We used them to refinish existing wood floors, paint, change out light fixtures, bath hardware, prep for installation of granite countertop, etc (the owner also owns a general contracting business and painting company but keeps them separate for liability reasons - should get a nice discount if you contract all the work at once). They did great work and went above and beyond on nit items that we added during the project. Did not use them to replace wood flooring, so not sure if that's how you plan to use them, but as a contractor, thought they were great.

Thanks, Truthmaker. Do you have a sense of how their fees compare to contractors in NYC (if you bid the job, were they least expensive, mid-level, etc.).

use Marc at floorworksny.com...or nyfloorworks.com..one of those. He has the best crew and manages/consults them perfectly to do an overall great job on any floor! I used him myself twice, he just did my mothers house on LI that is coming on the market for sale, and I reffered him to 4 clients; all who were very happy..

I don't know about floorworksny.com (although I trust Noah's recs). I have a friend who liked the work done by New York Wood. Both are probably good. Get quotes.

kylewest - I'd say they are middle of the road to slightly higher. We got 3 bids on this project (and they were the middle bid) and had used different contractors on a prior project that were more expensive (but much more complicated work). For us, they could guarantee delivery on our timeline because they employ several crews and therefore could be assign a team immediately. The lower-priced contractors were smaller shops and wanted to schedule several weeks out and we were concerned that even then they could run into delays due to availability of resources.

Reviving this thread. Thanks for the recommendations for New York Wood Flooring and Floor Works New York. Any other companies that you recommend for repairing and refinishing a herringbone patterned oak floor?

What's the normal turnaround time and cost for this type of service? Room is approximately 175 square feet. I'm trying to get a rough estimate of time and cost given people's actual experience.

Valldejuli - we used NY Wood Flooring to refinish our existing floors for our entire apartment, approx 2000 sq ft. It took them total of 4 days to complete the job... 2 days to sand and 2 days to apply the poly.

mia55 - Could you share how much they charge per sq ft?

Anbody have an idea of how much it costs per square foot to put in new wood floor? Nothing fancy as far as material/wood goes. Super told me he could do about 850 s.f. of our 1150 s.f. apartment for about $15,000. Got another quote for a little under $20K. Thanks.

wyndcliff - Price per sq ft depends on the prep work... floor repairs, if any, moving furniture, etc. We had an empty apartment and floors did not need any repair. I think we paid about $3 per sq ft but I'm not certain. It was few years back. I do remember thinking it wasn't as expensive as I had anticipated.

You also have to decide if you want prefinished, unfinished, or laminate. Also what the subfloor is made of and whether that impacts the choice of flooring you will be installing. These things impact price.

I am looking to re-do my wood floors. When I went on the CitySearch website (which has reviews of NYC vendors and service providers), New York Wood Flooring had some seriously negative reviews from disgruntled and disgusted customers who felt like they'd gotten no value for their money. Now obviously complainers are more incentivized to post than satisfied customers, but it does give me pause since there were at least 4 people who deemed their work to be substandard.

About 2 weeks ago I used Floor Works New York out of Astoria, Queens to refinish my herringbone oak floors and am really pleased with the results. Found out about them in this thread, urbandigs mentioned them. Marc came out and gave me an estimate and I found him to be a real trustworthy guy. No problems with the crew, they showed up on time, left my place clean, were polite.

Also had New York Wood Flooring give an estimate as well as another company, but I've already thrown away their business card, sorry I don't remember their name, but they were only going to do 2 coats not 3 so I ruled them out as soon as the estimator left. New York Wood Flooring's guy gave a real sales job which I had already read about online about how they do X number of floors a year, blah blah blah, and yep, I read all the bad reviews too. They were the highest bidder too.

Reviving this thread - thoughts about Home Depot? We're looking to install hardwood floors over our parquet hardwood floors. Any perspective on cost and quality is really appreciated.

Do not install hardwood over hardwood! The noise to the neighbors downstairs will be deafening, and you'll have nothing but problems from them (rightfully so).

I looked at a few Home Depots in the Bronx and Manhattan and decided against using them for hardwood. For example, the Bruce flooring didn't look great. I went to a place in Brooklyn, Paramount Flooring, and they had the top of the line of Bruce flooring (50 year warranty, Best grade, Dundee). It was significantly different! The price was just a little more than what they were selling at Home Depot.
