Discussion about
Bloomberg just announced a MANDATORY EVACUATION of Flood Zone A. EVERYBODY OUT by 5PM Saturday.

ALL the colored areas.
It's flood zone A and all of the Rockaways, flood zone A or not. There's a better map at the following link -- Zone A is only a portion of colored areas.

Is it everyone in zone A or just hospitals, etc.? I haven't seen any general evacuation order, but maybe I missed it.
Everyone. Bloomberg & Co have a press conference going on now, live webcast at nyc.gov.
All MTA services beginning to shut down on Saturday at noon as well, regardless of area.
Zone A "could experience storm surge from ANY hurricane".
Zone B "may experience storm surge flooding from a MODERATE (Category 2 or higher) hurricane".
What's odd is that Riverside Boulevard and the cross streets to Freedom Place are Zone A, but they're much higher than the promenade. Maybe because their cellars go down that far.
Ridiculous to order an evacuation of everyone now; those who want to leave should do so, but mandatory evacuation at this point is completely uncalled for.
You're right. So much better to wait until the hurricane is bearing down on us.
Don't forget to tip the doorman on the way out.
Too late. The doorman left an hour ago. You're on your own now. Better stock up on that ammo if you're planning on staying put. There will be plenty of looters about ...
Good thing you don't live in the UK; they would have you arrested for incitement via the Internet. Seriously, between this and the preparedness thread, you are doing your best to help whip up the frenzy. Why is it wrong to see if the storm (which is creeping along at 14 mph) is really going to pan out or whether it'll just be like a slightly larger thunderstorm? We'll know by mid-day tomorrow whether or not we actually need to evacuate, etc.
the problem is that once all mass transit is shut down its not clear how people even could evacuate.
"Good thing you don't live in the UK; they would have you arrested for incitement via the Internet."
Indeed.
And if I lived in Germany I'd be arrested for Thought Crimes.
It's so nice NOT to live in a socialist "utopia."
for the especially nervous about this, it might make sense to book a hotel room 1.5-2 hours out of the city, get on a communter train in that general direction and have a local car service to pick you up at the station and drive you to the hotel. extreme, but it might be worth your peace of mind.
Agreed. Try not to think about your windows blowing out or the looters breaking into your apartment.
The Delamar Hotel in Greenwich is only about a five minute walk from the Metro-North station. Beautiful waterfront setting too!
there are njtransit buses that go all the way out to pennsylvania, too. could look into that. ok, so this may actually be happening, huh. good luck everyone and be careful.
Everyone can just head up to 183rd and Ft. Washington Ave.
NJ Transit is completely shutting down for the storm
what would you do?
Looks like ZipCar will be your only way out of NYC, assuming they are still available. Forget about getting a cab.
NYC's survival is based on ZipCar. Not comforting.
how many fools does it take to?
Dont worry everyone, Bloomberg has safely evacuated NYC and is in his Bermuda mansion. You suckers are on your own!
asshole.
