Discussion about
is switching from a regular water heater (that keeps hot water hot at all times) to an "on demand" water heater (heats only as needed for a shower,etc...) worth the hassle?

First question is whether you have the electric and/or the venting to do it. If you're looking at the electric water heater, the electrical work required for this is beyond just about anything else needed in a home. You need 200 amp for sure and I think at least three open slots in your panel.

For the gas version, the venting requirements are a lot more restrictive, IIRC. Can't put it in a finished or semi-finished area -- need a lot of open space.

I looked into doing this twice -- first in a former home and then in a Manhattan co-op (postwar with electric everything) -- once with gas and once with electric and it ended up being impossible in both cases.

If you speak to an electrician he can easily upgrade the wattage for the new water heater. It might be expensive in the long run, but overall it'll save you tons on your water and electric bill and does a great job for heat on demand
