Debt as a percent of GDP was much higher than now during and after WW2.
Nominal debt is meaningless.

Nominal debt <> meaningless. Because nominal debt is what leads to debt payments, although, as your maid says, nominal debt can be inflated away (and today's PPI seems to indicate that that's exactly what's happening).
The problem is that governments should be countercyclical: paying down debt in the Good Times, and incurring it in the Bad. St. Ronald and George II did exactly the opposite.
