Discussion about
I recently visited the Bowery lighting district looking to buy some new lamps and it seems to have downsized quite a bit. Any suggestions for shops other than Gracious Homes with a nice selection of lamps? My taste tends towards the traditional more than ultra modern, but I would like to visit a few shops. Is there a new lighting district somwhere in NYC?

Trend Lighting has a sale right now on Onekingslane.
I know I'm not a fan of buying furnishings online either unless I can touch, fell, smell.

I however did just buy some environment furniture pieces that Ive already seen live but for 50% less.

No I dont work for onekingslane, but for those who are signed up will back up how great they are.

Restoration Hardware - turns out they're amidst a Fall Lighting Event, to boot.

I find that their things work nicely in Trad, Mod or whatever. They do well as bridge pieces, too.

Filaments in the West Village, 34 West 13th Street
vintage, traditional, mid-century, art deco, contemporary, custom, antique, and one-of-a-kind pieces.
You can see the longest running off-off-broadway play in history a few doors down- LINE (it wasn't good but the weirdness factor is worth it)
And Bar Six makes a nice drink.

scour your building's garbage chutes.. lot of rich trust fundies in my rental prop..

scored 2 original canvas paintings and an aged/distressed side table (thank god for the gloss trend years back)..

still get comments on all three from tenants.. i say i found them in a cute side street in Antibes and they ask where to sign

Traditional? Oriental Lamp Shade on UES (Lexington) and UWS (70s). Expensive but nice selection of traditional/classics.

Modern stuff comes from Filaments on 13th street and traditional stuff from Olde Good Things on 16th Street.

We also liked Lees Studio and purchased many different fixture at Lighting By Gregory in the Bowery. Both have good web sites and good selections. Lees was more expensive; Lighting By Gregory had very good selection and comparatively low prices.

New York Lighting on Bowery is pretty good. They also have a website with extensive collection.

For modern tastes, Lighting by Gregory in the city, or YLghting.com has great selection, service and occassional sales. Modernica.net in Los Angeles sells George Nelson bubble lamps, simple and classic and also periodically on sale.

Remains Lighting is good but somewhat pricey. If you want something cheap Home Goods can be a good bet. If you're looking for higher-end collector type stuff, try First Dibs and look at the NYC dealers. ABC Home might be worth a try too.

Love Home Goods but like Century 21, you cant go there counting on finding something specific your looking for. (for example, the day your looking for dress pants you only find shoes)
