Discussion about
I am doing a complete renovation of a kitchen 9x10, bathroom 5x7, and refinishing the hardwood floors in my 1200 ft apartment. I will move out of the place while the work is being done and wanted to know how long I should plan on renting another place to live? Thanks for any advice from those of you who have experience with renos No electrics, gas, plumbing being move, no change to layouts but will demo 1 wall to open up the kitchen. Retile walls/floor and install stock IKEA cabinets, midrange appliances (GE). Nothing fancy or custom made that takes weeks to order, just stock items as much as possible
Tommy,
There are two ways to answer this. One is how long it should take and the other is how long will it take.
If you know what you want the project should take 6 weeks. It will take 8 weeks.
Thanks Jeff... since I have to live in reality whether I want to or not, I guess I know which of your 2 part answer applies!
oh Primer you are soo coool
Hi Tommy,
I have semi-similar specs to yours. 1400 sq feet, put in new floors, reno'd 2.5 baths and did new counters/backsplash/floors in similar sized kitchen.....
I would say Primer is right on the money with 8 weeks. It has taken us 8 weeks but with ALOT of down time due to my indecisiveness with finishes and waiting for things to arrive. But I'm long distance so you shouldn't have that issue.
I have some rec's for you as well if interested. Just let me know.
Thanks Angel. Appreciate any rec's you may have
6 to 8 weeks about right.
but if you are in hurry you can push the limit and make a deal with your contractor shorter time.
also if your building allow additional working hours.
your work could be done in 4 weeks.

if the cabinets and tile are in, i would go closer to 4 weeks. if ordering IKEA cabinets and you did not receive them yet..... good luck. there are always errors in the orders and this can drag out for weeks.
It can be quicker to rent a pickup and pickup the Ikea cabs yourself - note that the base system is the same but the doors are different. Get the base cabs and upper cabs in ASAP. The best times to get stuff like that from Ikea is first thing in the mornings on weekends or weekdays.
I don't know about other contractors but I send one of my guys who is an Ikea expert to purchase and deliver the cabinets to the job site. This way all the pieces we need are accounted for and we are able to bring them back the same day. We do not wait for a delivery.
so...sounds good.
how much more does that cost?
Just curious, Tommy - and I know costs differ widely with taste, materials, etc. but how much are you spending on kitchen? How much per bathroom? TIA!

Are you even in the market for a renovated kitchen and bathroom, or are you just causing trouble?
no.
no.
Is that a double negative?
you asked two questions. and i answered. despite the fact that you broke the basic rule.

There are 13 basic terms, not just 1 as you seem to suggest.
pathetic.
I will charge you only $500 to order and deliver your Ikea cabs.
We don't charge anything to order and deliver. If we are taking on a project that includes Ikea components we order them and pick them up so we do not have any delays, its just easier that way
come on...don't treat us like idiots.
you handle this no matter what?
Primer, if you were hired by someone who had a window in the shower, what would you do? Would you handle the matter for that person, no matter what?
Huntersberg,
I missed the original posts about the window in the shower. I would love to know what that is about.
Columbiacounty,
If I am hired to do a project and it has Ikea cabinets I send my guy to purchase them and bring them to the site. It is easier for us to do that then have the client buy them. If you don to now what you need and purchase them it would cause delays. Why is that a problem?
Columbiacounty was looking for a rental at 98 Riverside Drive. The apartment that he saw had a window in the shower. It was such a problem for him that he came on to streeteasy to malign the broker who showed him the apartment. Oh my goodness, a window in the shower ... of all the difficulties of the New York City real estate market, THAT is the original source of columbiacounty's bitterness
what is the original source of your bitterness?
I'm amused, not bitter.
