Discussion about
Any thoughts out there on the pros and cons of going with either one for stock kitchen cabinets for those of us on a tight budget? Seem to be reading a lot more positive IKEA comments on recent SE postings but still come across someone once in awhile who swears IKEA cabinets fall apart faster than toothpicks

I'd probably go with the Depot simply because Ikea style is not my fave.

i'd go with HD, but would rather go with one of the online places, though i do not have any experience with them. if you go to chinatown, you will definitely find some plywood kitchens that are already in NY and can be delivered within a few days. cabinet sizes are limitted to what the "standard" is.

Deepdive,

I have installed many Ikea and home depot cabinets. In my personal opinion I would go with Ikea. I have not heard one single complaint of either brand. I do find it easier to work with Ikea and you do not have to wait for delivery.

These are some Ikea kitchens we are about to finish

we did ikea cabinets in a kitchen once, and had nothing but a positive experience - except of course snaking through the ikea store.

Definitely IKEA....have three friends with IKEA kitchens and they all love it, quality is good and they last. Home Depot has horrible cabinets, used them in peoples houses ans they tend to start falling apart pretty fast

I don't have a high opinion of Ikea quality overall but was pleasantly surprised when one of the Offpsring installed an Ikea kitchen recently. The only negative I could see is that they have very limited selections and don't make cabinets in many of the standard sizes. If you can design a kitchen around Ikea's offerings you can do pretty well. My daughter and SIL put in Ikea cabinets but ordered custom wood doors from Scherr's.

I love walking through IKEA. It's fun. I was just at IKEA in Paramus since I was driving past and had nothing better to do. Had some Sweedish meatballs there.

@estimator or anyone else - Does this look reasonable for a functional budget level kitchen?

9x10 L shaped - demo 1 wall but otherwise same layout

$30-35K budget

$10-15K labor including demo, installation, remove wall to open up kitchen, new electric outlets, vent/gas/plumbing stay where they are
$6-8K stock wall cabinets (e.g. Ikea, HD), island
$5-7K fridge, microwave, range, range-hood (GE Profile)
$4-5K engineered stone countertop, subway tile backsplash, porcelain floor tiles, Kohler sink/faucet

DD:

Unless you plan on displacing Santa Claus as the season's leading gift-giver, you can
do your kitchen for a lot less.

Yes, I agree that it can be done less. That Cabinets to Go Place I linked to above advertises kitchens for only $200 per foot of cabinets. So you should be able to do the kitchen for half that much. The labor figure seems inflated, especially since your not moving pipes or electrical. If you were, then that would justify the expense.

Check the photos at http://www.cabinetstogo.com. Every door and drawer is misaligned with its neighbor, in both planes. Is that due to sloppy manufacturing, or bad assembly of the samples, or what?

Deepdive,

You can always do things for less however your estimates are pretty much right on. Most of the kitchens i do average 30-35k.

One thing you did not mention is if you have to replace the plumbing back to the riser. This would be included in your price.

I would recommend adjusting your budget down to $25K max, the inevitable cost overrun will get you to $35K. I did a similarly sized kitchen for $15,000 last year but I picked everything out myself. IKEA kitchen, countertop was from Home Depot, appliances from Best Buy. The backsplash was glass tile. Send me an email and you can see the pics. Greenlivingnyc@gmail.com

Krisiskris,

10k in overruns on a 25k project? Something went very wrong. You ended up spending the same 35k that we are talking about. What were the overruns that you had?

Primer,

Just found out I am not required to replace the branch plumbing back to the riser for bathroom or kitchen renovations in m building. How much $$$ can I expect to save or free up for other stuff?

I decided to change the habit and try some other place. So, when I remodelled my kitchen, I went to K&N Sales.
