Auxillary doorman

Hi ..we have an auxillary doorman that fills in when someone is on vacation, sick, etc....i think ive seen him 10 x in 1 yr....is protocol to tip these folks as well?

I say no. Our building doesn't even put their names on the list of staff. If you feel the person deserving, he certainly isn't going to be upset that you are giving him money.

yeah...he was put on the list along with another person who does odds and ends around the building.....last yr i gave that person a tip since he helped me move in...but this year he really hasnt done anything for me specifically but you never know if he will be needed in the future....so i might tip......

Give the guy at least a $20 or don't tip at all. $10 comes across as uber cheap.

Agree with bramstar: $10 is the kind of tip you might slip to someone by hand for helping to move a piece of furniture or something (even then it is usually a $20 these days). If the building put them on the list, give at least $20. In the scheme of things it likely means little to you and a lot to the recipient. Can only bring good karma. (To save NYCMatt the trouble of a response, I can tell you his minority view is that building staff are adequately compensated and tipping amounts to nothing more than a shakedown that should be resisted).
