Dear StreetEasy, First of all, thanks in advance for your advice or direction on this subject. I know this tends to be a very sensitive topic and many people's opinion differ greatly regarding pets in the city, pets in rentals, large dogs in condo, etc. I respect those individual views 100%, but at this point would appreciate any positive feedback or help that you could provide. I may be relocating to Manhattan early this summer for work and joining me in the move will be my fiance and our Great Dane. I won't waste your time telling you how great of a dog he is because I'm a businessman and understand the issues/concerns that come with ANY pet, much less a very large dog. That being said, I currently live in a 1,000 sq ft condo and he does great. I'm very active so he joins me for 2-3 walks a day (with one being a jog) so he spends the rest of his time sleeping or hanging out on the couch. I'm not overly concerned with the amount of space we have in an apartment or townhome because we do spend quite a bit of time out and about. The major task at hand is to find a nice place in a good location that will allow my dog as well. Budget is still just a bit up in the air. I would obviously like to find a great deal and save as much as possible, but will most likely be able to spend up to $5k (or a bit more depending on the property's amentities). I also know having a dog may decrease my choices and increase the cost. I will be working in the financial district and have read great things about nearby Battery Park City, but have also read that the Upper West Side tends to be the best place for dogs due to the proximity to Central Park and other dog facilities. Aside from the dog situation, we would love to be in an area that allows us to appreciate and get to enjoy the many great things the city has to offer. Again, thank you for your time and feedback. Sincerely, J [less]

Am happy to help if you want (many of my clients are big dog people, though their tastes tend to run to retrievers rather than Danes). Realize that you are cut off from some inventory of the big rental companies (Glenwood buildings, with a couple of exceptions, are no dogs; Rockrose has a weight limit at buildings like the Archive) but your choice of neighborhood can be be pretty broad. BPC and the UWS are notoriously dog-friendly, but so are parts of Midtown (which has access to the south end of Central Park, and is the only place I've ever seen Danes) and Chelsea.
It will help you to have a cute photo of your dog on your phone, so you can explain to landlords what they're getting into, and a letter from your vet or trainer saying that Fido is five, spayed, and has no health or behavior issues.

look at nybits.com for listing of no broker-fee rentals all over the city--easy enough to call around to check pet policies
Thank you both for the responses. I just noticed that I started this discussion under sales so I have tried to move it to the rental section.
Ali - Once I get just a few more details (mainly for budgeting purposes), I will contact you to get your further thoughts or suggestions. We would love to find a place in Midtown, but I've just run into size limits at most places. Hopefully we can find one when the time comes!

I am a real estate broker and mortgage broker. I live in Battery Park City, but was born and raised on the Upper West Side. I moved to BPC in 1999. I'm very happy here, the air is a lot fresher, and it's beautiful. The promenande, park and river is far more accessible than trying to get to the parks on the UWS depending on where you live there. However the UWS is still very special to me.
Koro,my girlfriend's dog, loves it here. He came from Montana.
Would be happy to help you find a place.

First off, please refrain from using the term "townhome" if you hope to attain any respect on this board, or in New York City in general. In this neck of the woods it's a brownstone. Townhomes are what developers in middle America call their cardboard-and-pergo construction to try to make it seem quaint.
Now, getting to your question. If you will be working in FiDi, and don't mind living on top of a former landfill, then BPC is probably the way to go. UWS is nice, but a helluva long commute for Wall Street working stiffs.
Remember that all NYC parks have strict dogs-on-leash rules so Fido won't be able to run free unless you hie him to a gated dog run, which can be found intermittently befouling the aforementioned parks.
Just follow the sounds of yapping and snarling and the aroma of fresh poo to the canine hangout nearest you.
Squid, you can go off-leash in many parts of Central Park as long as it's early in the morning (before 9 a.m.) or late at night (9 p.m.) and your dog is behaving.

Widebottom/brooks, I will give you a thousand dollars if you can find this guy an apartment on nybits that will accept a great dane, anywhere below 96th street.
Squid, in Brooklyn and Harlem they are brownstone. I've never once heard a ues'er say they live in a brownstone.
finally agree JJ, I was about to tell the guy to check out Jersey City, it's not a bad commute. You can probably rent a big town home there with a back yard big enough for a Great Dane, But I have no idea.
can you help him find a place in JC?
Why don't you send him the website for urban sherpa? It's all anyone needs right?
Everyone loves a Great Dane. Actually, they are jealous. Non-dog owners think, that's the dog I truly want, I'd deal with the sacrifices of ownership in Manhattan if it were for a truly deserving dog, a Great Dane.
Dog owners think, I bought this little piece of crap because she fit in my carry bag on the subway and my wife/girl/boyfriend would be jealous, but realistically, Great Dane ... that's the dog I should have bought, none of that stupid little toy yapping crap.
Size, dignity, a friend you want in the portrait above your - or your grandchild's - fireplace.
Appeal to that sensibility when renting.
"Squid, in Brooklyn and Harlem they are brownstone. I've never once heard a ues'er say they live in a brownstone."
I defy you to find any true New Yorker who would ever stoop to using the term "townhome" with a straight face. Townhouse, maybe. Townhome, no way.
Wait.So is it "brownstone" on UWS, Brooklyn, and Harlem, and "townhouse" on UES?
hey penthouselady, what did you think about columbiacounty's criticism of inonada yesterday?
