Poorishladay, keep hope alive and go to the Obama rally. Also tell his people to tell him to get behind Sen. Dodd's mortgage relief bill. It's one of the only things that stands between normalcy and economic calamity over the next 6-18 months. I know that some of the (expletive deleted) gurus on this board want the market to do it's work, but I frankly don't want to live through a deep recession, don't want to see people put out of their homes and jobs, etc. It doesn't have to be that way.

I thought socialist populism was reserved for places in South America? If you don’t think Obama will have an impact on Manhattan RE, you are mistaken. Just wait for his anti-globalization and socialized medicine programs to kick in. Our paychecks will be 15% lighter and the economy will really grind to a halt.

Yes, I think Obama may be just as bad for the national economy and Manhattan RE as our last crypto-socialist President, Bill Clinton.

Frankly, I think all of these remaining candidates (Hillary, Obama and McCain) would govern from the center, and be a major improvement on what we have now.

Whoever is elected is going to face challenges undreamed of eight years ago. Looks like this eight-year nightmare of a presidency will end with a bang as the national economy de-constructs.

Hopefully, there's enough strength there to keep things going to the point that nobody has to take a 15% paycut.

Isn't anonymity interesting. Is it racist and/or sexist to say what I said? When we are standing in the voting booth casting our vote, what is the bottom line in our decision. This country hasn't come that far in those ways. Comedians get away with remarks, but I'm not a comedian, so am I able to speak my mind frankly?

Juiceman, very recently (10 years or so ago) we had a medical care system that provided much greater coverage at MUCH less cost to the consumer. Almost every other "advanced" industrialized country has coverage that puts our country to shame, both for the haves and the have nots.

My daughter had appendicitis two years ago. I have recently given up the good fight, and paid off the last of the bills that OUGHT to have been paid by the insurance company. Over $4000 (including an ambulance bill for a little girl who could literally not walk two steps). And we pay over $1700 a month for our coverage.

Doctors are not happy, not at all. I think they may wish that they hadn't opposed Hillary's proposal in 92-93, because they're getting slammed now. Where are our next doctors going to come from? Who in their right f'n mind would spend the years and money for med school right now? WalMart clinics, here we come.

Why wasn't the ambulance not covered...I am self insured and never had a problem. Hope your daughter is healthy and happy now!!

Julia, the insurance company claimed that we should have been able to get her into a cab. Early appendicitis is often quite mild. I suspected (possibly) appendicitis but realized that because she had eaten dinner she wouldn't be eligible for surgery for a number of hours, so I decided to wait. She woke up in the middle of the night in incredible pain, and my doctor changed his opinion to appendicitis so we had to call an ambulance. She IS very healthy and (usually, she is a pre-teen) happy now. Thanks!

I actually think that the election, the economy and the real estate market are very inter-related so think poorishlady's thread here is fine, even if it went off in a direction she was not necessarily intending.

If you live in Manhattan chances are an Obama Administration would cost you at least $6,611 per year in lost income forever. Obama's plan to fix Social Security is to raise the salary cap on Social Security (FICA) contributions FROM $97,500 per year currently to $200,000 per year. Few people in America make more than $97,500, so increase would affect very few people. However, if you live in Manhattan, making $200,000 per year is your entry into the lower middle class. Obama's plan would take an additional 6.45% of your income from $97,500 to $200,000 to "fix" Social Security, that is $6,611 less take home pay for you to spend on rent or mortgage in Manhattan. If he rolls back Bush's federal tax rates, that will cost you a few extra thousand more.

New York votes Democratic generally and Manhattan more so - It is filled with people who vote based on social issues vs. fiscal (people like Bloomberg are good examples, while being billionaires).

Thank god that Obama is willing to be fiscally responsible enough to raise those taxes and roll back the tax cuts (and yes, I make enough to be affected by it.) Tough, but absolutely needed.

I think Bloomberg may a funny comment about Bush's recent tax cuts - I think he compared to it to give more alcohol to an alcoholic.
