Discussion about
Hello. I'm a renter in a pre-war building on the UWS that does not come with window unit AC. Landlord said that I can add window ACs but need somebody to professionally build the external mounts and do the install. Each room is wired for AC (separate plugs that I believe are on separate circuits). A few questions: 1) Does anybody have recommendations for somebody to do the installations? 2) Am I... [more]

Let me be the first vote for RCI on 98th and Broadway. They are not dirt-cheap, but their selection is great and their service is good.

Another enthusiastic vote for RCI. They installed 9 window units in my condo a couple of years back. We had a defective unit installed, which they replaced immediately at no cost; also had an issue with one of the installations months later and they dealt with the issue attentively.

Their prices are competitive, and their service, as a neighborhood retailer, is personal and satisfying.

Another vote for RCI. They are not the absolute cheapest, but their installer fees are fair, and will offset any non-savings vs. a big box like PCRichard. Just go to RCI. Good (quiet) window units will cost from $450-700 each + install of about $100 or so (if you need plexiglass and an aluminum bar, it may be slightly more). You could buy el-crapola ACs, but you get what you pay for.
When you go to RCI, have your room dimensions with you (including ceiling height). Too many BTUs are just as bad as too few. RCI will calculate your needs.

PS -- RCI will provide insurance certificate for your building. Some buildings will not let any workers in without one.

Thanks! Will check out RCI. Assume they have insurance / etc. (i.e. are landlord-friendly installers)?

Freebird (or other posters), I just got a reasonable quote from RCI for a/c installation in our UWS apartment, but I'm concerned that there seem to be quite a few bad reviews of RCI on Yelp. I'm not sure who else to use, though, and the weather is HOT. Can you help push me over the edge and buy from RCI? Thanks.
