The apartment has been completely renovated and they said they have taken care of the problem, but I've had close friends that have had to deal with bedbugs and they describe it as one of the worst experiences of their lives. So, how do we know that they won't come back? At the beginning of our apartment search passed on an amazing apartment (in an amazing location/price/style) because there had been bedbug problems at the building. One month later and here we are again. We're supposed to move out of our place next weekend and I feel trapped. I cannot believe they waited this long to tell us this. What do you guys think? Would you move into a place where you know there were bedbugs w/in the last year? [less]
Yes, absolutely, especiall if it's an apartment that you really like and feel that you could enjoy living in. Take it from me. I live in San Francisco and live in an exquisite art deco, New-York style building. 2 years ago, I started noticing strange bites which I thought to be mosquitos (in November???), and sure enough, it turned out to be bed bugs. I had the exterminator in twice a month for 9 months and could not get rid of them until I discovered diatomaceous earth. Check it out on the internet. This inexpensive powder works the way boric acid works to kill roaches. I convinced the Board to purchase a large amount and the entire building (162 units) were encouraged to use it, and now they are all gone.
It is truly a HIDEOUS experience, but they can be controlled and eliminated. Don't give up a truly great apartment because of this. If you don't believe me, do some research. If the entire building is infested and people don't care (I can't even begin to imagine this scenario), then it's a different story.
Corragio!!!
no. I would be very careful. Maybe negotiate a month-to-month deal w/ your current landlord. Better than the potential hell that could await you.
Op who is the owner?

jdsbd: How were you able to find out that there was a bedbug problem at the building you passed on?
Who informed you at signing?
Owners have to provide with a state mandated disclosure form.

Or you found other human beings actually live there...
Lets be serious. These pests - bedbugs, roaches, mice, rats etc are all endemic in New York. One should assume every apartment is infested and take appropriate precautions and pest control actions.

No bedbugs, roaches, mice, or rats here. None.

This is the worst thing that can happen to a New Yorker?
