Discussion about
Has anyone used either of these services to move a couch into an apartment building where the elevator and stairs are too small? How did this work?

We used Dr Sofa. This was a last minute thing because we figured out the thing wouldn't fit only after the delivery people dumped it in the lobby and left, and a board member went ballistic at us. They are only too happy to do same day appointments in our experience.

What they do is take the sofa away to their plant and partially disassemble/cut the frame. This doesn't involve cutting the fabric or anything. They put in metal brackets so it can be reassembled. Once they've done that, they bring it back, bring it to your apartment, and bolt it together, and reattach the upholstery. Net result is it looks the same and is supposedly stronger for the experience.

Subsequent moves are easier because the bracket installation only has to be done once.

The total experience, including the tip which they made clear early on they wanted, was something like $450. We were pretty happy because the sofa looks great and they bailed us out of a bit of a jam.

The guys came and fixed everything within an hour. The arrived at 5 and were out of here shortly after 6. The managed to get it up in two pieces via the elevator. They were nice, fast, clean and the sofa still looks brand new. I’m very thrilled — thank you all for making the sofa work/fit. (of course when I move out of this apartment you all will be getting another call!) :)
