Toilet Spacing to Sink

Discussion about
I am looking to update my bathroom with a new toilet and sink. Currently there is a pedestal sink installed but for storage I'd like to install a normal vanity. It's a very tight space though and I'm concerned that sitting on the toilet (which is next to the sink), I'll be too boxed in when I go from a pedestal to a vanity. I was wondering if there is a recommended minimum distance between the toilet and the sink (and no, there's no way the bathroom will meet any sort of ADA spec). Thanks.

The standard is 15" from center of toilet to sink or tub or wall.

There is no "recommended" distance, it is all by code. The general standard code is 15" from center as stated above, but you need to confirm depending upon where you live ie NYC or some town in CT or NJ

For adding storage space, consider a deeper medicine cabinet than you may currently have. Robern, for example, makes 6" and even 8" deep models. If you can even partially recess them into the wall, they offer a nice little bump to storage space. My walls couldn't accommmodate the entire depth of the 6" cabinet due to pipes running through the space, but the few inches that could be recessed was enough. The bit that protrudes from the wall is covered with an available mirror trim. I was worried that the triim is only 2" wide but 3" was protruding from the wall. Once installed, I saw my concerns were unwarranted as it is nearly impossible to notice and was not worth even considering custom mirrored trim. Just two cents since you are doing some reno and said you need space...

How tall are your ceilings? If you have 9' or taller, consider mounting a "railroad" style rack: http://trainrack.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/NuovoShelf-TowelBar.jpg (Restoration Hardware used to have a nice line of these before they got totally weird.)

Years ago I bought one of these from Pottery Barn -- this is something similar: http://images.wfb.ca/live/products/large/201511/%23/white-entryway-cubby-shelf.jpeg?v=1299025691

Mine has a towel rack instead of the hooks. I installed it 7 feet off the floor, so it's up and out of everyone's way, but it provides a lot of storage for all those pesky little things that otherwise would clutter up the sink.

and don't forget IKEA...they sell some very practical cabinets with decent hardware that you could hang on the wall.

Just be sure not to hang your toothbrush on the toilet-facing side of the sink. And/or always close the lid before you flush.
