Discussion about
I see that Phase I is currently scheduled to be completed around 2016. Will Phase II and III begin only after Phase I is complete? I am currently looking to rent an apartment and one area we are considering is Midtown East. Would renting an apartment around, say, 55th and 2nd be a bad idea in terms of possible subway construction? 52nd and 2nd? Thanks very much for your help.

I think the MTA will have the best answers for scheduling. I can say that the construction in certain spots on 2nd ave is massive and will most likely take longer than expected.

2016?!? Probably more like 2061, if past history is any indicator of how this longest running show/folly will close.

In light of this, there's nothing to worry about, because the time they reach 55th Street, we may both be underground before the subway is!

Seriously, though: I wouldn't be too concerned. The (additional) noise, dust & detours will become part of the backdrop, as it already has further uptown.

Phase 3 is what will take the subway past your apartment (72nd st to Houston St). Phases 2 & 3 are set up so that they could be built concurrently. However, there is not any timetable yet for phases 2-4 because there is no funding commitments at this point.

2016 = the MTA unions will delay that sucker into 2099 to collect more overtime of "supervising"

Honestly, I walk by the contsruction on 87 and 2nd every day and they are making good progress everyday. It really is a massive undertaking.

You can look here
www.mta.info/capconstr/sas/documents/feis/55_street.pdf

They haven't identified which blocks the station would be under yet, but since there isn't even money for Phase 2, you can forget any planning for Phase 3 for at least 5-10 years.

There's even question whether there is intent by default to build down to Houston or if this was just Powerpointing to build support for the first phases.

Yes. You have years before the possibility of construction there. If you are renting (1 year leases I assume, there is ZERO risk.

Phase 2 will be between 96th and 125th Street, won't be to mid-town East for another 15 years and probably longer.

the word Phase has such sinister undertones. they should really call it something more cheerful.

they left the hole at ground zero unchanged for 10 years just for showroom purpose, people could do the same to 2nd ave subway construction anytime

What's "ground zero"?

while financing is technically the issue with the ground zero project, the real reason for it's constant delays is that no commercial interest actually wants a gianormous office building in that location. as far as i know the only objectors to the second ave projects are the small businesses whose day to day will be disrupted, but they are vastly outnumbered.

you have nothing to be concerned about relating to the 2nd ave subway in midtown location. It will not happen until your grandchildren are adults. However, betwen 56th and 59th streets and 1st to 3rd ave, you will have interruption for water tunnel #3 that has been ongoing in the area of 59th and 2nd. It moves south next year

"However, betwen 56th and 59th streets and 1st to 3rd ave, you will have interruption for water tunnel #3 that has been ongoing in the area of 59th and 2nd. It moves south next year"

That was the old plan, here is the new one:

"The confirmed route for the water main installation is 1) 1st Avenue between E. 59th and E. 61 Streets, 2) 3rd Avenue between E. 59th and E. 61st Streets, 3) E. 59th Street between 1st and 3rd Avenues, 4) E. 61st Street between 1st and 3rd Avenues."
