In every apartment I lived in, in New York, there have been sloping or uneven floors. Usually high points near the outer walls with low points towards the middle of the apartment. I just closed on an apartment with similar floors. The biggest problem area is the entry area of the living room which slopes away from the middle towards the foyer. I plan to remove part of a non-bearing wall which separates the living room from the hallway. Once removed, the contractor will patch or replace the area of the floor affected by the demo. When I initially met with my architect and contractor, I did not consider the possibility of expanding the repair and patch to include a larger area of the living room and leveling the floor. I won't meet with my architect or contractor again until after I get comments back on the scope of work proposal from the building manager/architect. The floors are original pre-war parquet. What are my options? Remove all of the flooring in the living room? Level up the subfloor and replace with new? Remove only the portion of the floor that slopes down, level the subfloor and retain as many of the original pieces of parquet and re-install? The area of floor is approx. 100sqft. [less]
In order to the level the floor it would be best to remove all the flooring. In some cases that are extreme you are unable to do it, if the floor is so off that once you level it it is above the front door for example, some buildings will not let you shave the front metal door down. In that case you have to pick and choose certain spots to level. Since you believe the high points are at the outer walls it should not be a problem
