Discussion about
I'm moving from the west coast next month and am planning to bring my 95lb dog. I know - he's big, but he's family. Would love to hear from anyone else with a big dog in this town... Any recommendations for how to find a good dog-friendly building, good neighborhood, dog daycares, etc? Any advice for finding landlords who won't freak out? I'd like to be in lower Manhattan, but am thinking Brooklyn might be the way to go? Thanks!

escape: I'm at the airport waiting for a flight so I don't mind informing you that there are a few very informative discussion threads on this topic. Search and go!

There is a guy in my building who moved here from California. His first N.Y.C. apt. was in Manhattan and he had to move because his dog didn't like the noise so he moved to Brooklyn.

When I lived in Manhattan there were a couple of dogs in my building that were "reluctant on the walk" because of traffic noise and they aren't city dogs, as one dog walker told me. I thought they look more as if they were terrified on the walk.

Escapedreams,
Of those rental buildings that do allow dogs, many have a weight limit (typically around 35-40 lbs)
I suggest you get pooch on accelerated diet.

fair # of bigger sized dogs in battery park city buildings. Officially they usually don't want more than 50 pounds, but pretty sure exceptions are made, probably with extra disclaimers/deposit paid etc.
41 river terrace 22 river terrace, solaire. BPC is dog heaven tho there's alot of poop everywhere :(

15 William Street has a dog run on the 4th floor. I had a 65 lbs dog there and it was great. The dog can run on the outdoor bball court and in the dog run.

20 exchange place and (I think) all of the metro loft management buildings at RentFidi.com allow dogs.

All Related Rentals are pet friendly. I've had great experiences there.

Not 100% sure, but I think the Extell buildings at 140, 160 and 180 riverside blvd as well as the Aldyn are pet friendly for big dogs. Also, a lot of the buildings in the financial district allow big dogs. You could try the rental buildings as well as some of the condo buildings that have lots of owner-landlords (20 pine and 15 broad are two that come to mind).

Some Macklowe buildings are dog friendly. Lots in Chelsea all around. I think that Peter Cooper and Stuy allow larger dogs as well. You'd need to check

Transplanted Californians with big dogs make horrible New Yorker's. The whole sense of entitlement thing out West.

Also go with anything Equity has. The UWS Trump buildings are a dog heaven. No major stress about weight restrictions.

Escapedreams, you should also consider Long Island City, Queens. Only 1 stop with subway with to Midtown Manhattan. Amazing views of East River and Manhattan, very dog friendly area. Lots of new rental buildings who are dog friendly, no weight restrictions.
If you ever need dog boarding, go to www.celebritypets.info. They are great and do free pick up and drop offs. Have backyard too. They send you daily video updates of your pet.
Good luck!

Don't put a 95lb dog in doggie daycare! Get a dog walker. Spend less and your dog will be much happier. Spending the day tired on your couch is far superior to city daycare.

Very true; but then you have to live in New Jersey and that is just embarrassing.
