Discussion about
Any recommendations for good black-out type window shades? Want something sturdy, good looking, but don't want to pay $1,000.

Is this for a bedroom or are you planning on using it in the shower?

I went with Gil from Daylight Window Treatment. Great guy and great price.
Did 3x motorized (somfy) blackout shades in the living, 4x chain blackout shades in the bedrooms, plus valance on all shades (looks great).
$6500 including tax and labor.
If I went with non motor in the living room, it would've been $3800 for 7 shades with valance.

Prices for Blackout roller shades depends on the fabric you choose and the sizes of the windows. There are 3 types of popular fabrics a low end Vinyl Shiny one that looks a bit cheap but does the work, a Standard Blackout that looks more like fabric with texture, And a high end one that looks much like a fabric and is thicker.

As for Blackout feature you should know that Roller shades are a good source of blackout but have light gaps of 1/2" - 3/4" on each side

If you seek to avoid those too you may go with Cellular shades, if measured correctly they would have 1/8" gaps on each side.

And the last option is curtains which will cost much more but will do the best job.

Let me know if you have any more questions,
Not sure how to set up to receive a notification that there is a message but you can email me directly at tom@horizonyc.com
