Discussion about
Hey Everone, Me and my girlfriend are moving into an apartment in NYC together in a month or so. I have a 65lb dog who will be joining us. We've just been having some issues finding apartments that allow dogs over 50LB. Iv read threads on here b4 about ppl saying they live/lived in buildings that only allowed a max of 50lb dogs but always used to see bigger ones walking around. In that regard i have two questions. How likely would it be to get kicked out of an apartment for the building finding out your pet is over 50lbs? Also can anyone please help and give me some apartments that either allow dogs over 50lbs or don't have a weight limit at all? The only ones iv come across are Parc East (gramercy) and park towers south (clinton) Thanks!!!
Brodsky Management rentals (see brodskyorg.com for listings) are very dog friendly, no weight limit that I'm aware of, though it might vary depending on the building. In response to your question about potential consequences for an over-the-size-limit pet, I have heard of tenants getting warning letters from their building about their dogs, and/or being asked to pay extra security deposits. Also know someone who had to hire an attorney to challenge his landlord over this issue. The tenant ultimately prevailed, b/c the dog had been there at her 55-plus-lb size for several years and the building did not make an issue of it previously; however, the situation between the tenant and the building remained uncomfortable after the dispute, and the 'win' came at a financial and emotional cost to tenant -- I think that he ultimately moved out a year or so later. Can't imagine a building weighing dogs as they come in the door, but in NYC real estate anything is possible, so best approach would be to find a building where big dogs are welcomed.
Tell management the dog weighs 45lbs.
Related Rentals are also dog friendly.
Also, the NYC dog law says that if you have a dog and are open about (which is hard not to be in the case of a 65 pound dog since he/she has to go outside a few times a day), once you have the dog in the apartment for 90 days, no matter what the landlord says, you can stay in your apartment and keep your dog. IF you had a little 5 pound dog and put him/her in your purse and snuck past the doorman every time you went outside, the law wouldn't help you.

So what if the building has a weight limit of only 50 pounds? They are not going to weigh your dog.
I rented through Metropolitan equities and they don't have a weight limit to pets. Plus it was no fee. You can search them here on streeteasy.com

That's a nice but impractical law.
1 - Landlord could choose not to renew you at the next go-around.
2 - Landlord could use clauses in your lease if you are a menace in the building. One complaint, say from the parents of a child who happens to weigh less than 65 pounds, that's it for you.
Ageloff Towers in the East Village are extremely dog friendly... at any weight.
Try Chelsea Tower (100 West 26th) They're dog friendly and I've certainly seen very big dogs coming and going.
Who the h*ll would want to live in an apartment with a 65lb dog?
Make the whole thing moot by getting your dog in the right weight class. Stretch out those morning walks so that Fido is sweating off the pounds. And no more leftover food from the dinner table: it's all Diet Alpo, all the time. Dehydrate the pooch the day before the weigh-in. When he comes in at 49.9 pounds, you take a picture of the scale.
OK, I got nothing, but seriously, they probably won't weigh your dog. Just take Mutombo's advice and say he weighs 45 pounds, and is fully grown.
Start feeding him adderall and diet coke - it works for all of the Brearley girls.
leave the dog with your parents in the burbs. all 3 of you will be happier (you, gf and dog).
I've seen people walk a great dane and another one a german shepard along Riverside Blvd and dogs in the Riverside dog run on 72nd Street that are bigger than 45 lbs so obviously there buildings that will allow it. However, its probably not easy to find and you will probably need a broker to help you find the apt.
they probably own a condo, not in rentals
