Discussion about
hello all, does anyone have an idea of some of the "quieter" blocks in the EV? IE, not completely packed with 15 bars and speakeasies and restaurants and herds of frat boys throwing trash cans and screaming all night? I am being realistic and looking for relative peace. I know to stay off St. Mark's, probably off 1st and all of avenue A. I was thinking East 3-6 between A and C may prove to be somewhat better than some other streets in the area. Any input or experience? I know there is at least one venue per block MINIMUM but I'm currently on a street where there are over 10 venues and there is no quiet, at all.

Some of the street blocks between 2nd and 3rd Avenues are pretty quiet below St. Mark's (I lived on 6th and my friend lived on 5th both of which were pretty quiet; 7th is quiet other than McSorley's that gets rowdy). I think lower Alphabet City can get pretty loud (more from rougher project and homeless crowd than fratty) - of all the fights I've seen in Manhattan over the past 10 years, at least 2/3 have been in Alphabet City... Then again, being close to Zum Schneider is a big plus!

I would take a look at the following blocks, they are beautiful and quiet:

6th Street between B and C
7th Street between B and C or between C and D
8th Street between B and C
9th Street between B and C
11th Street between A and B or B and C
12 Street between A and B

I agree with flink1960

Also can check these blocks as well.

2nd Street between 1st & A & A & B
3rd Street between 1st & A (Also A & B, but closer to A)
4th Street between 1st A & A & B

Sorry - 7th is not quiet. I am between 1st and second and live over 4 bars and a cigar shop, with a street facing bedroom. The noise was reasonable until Klimat opened, they dont have much business but their only asset is that they can open the full front with a garage door, i can hear the conversations at the bar, in my bedroom. This wouldnt be an issue if they would close the open door at a reasonable hour - they call 1am a reasonable hour.

A lot of the noise is sirens/trucks on the avenues and foot traffic between bars, so i dont think it matters how many bars your street has. I used to live on 2nd ave between 7th and 8th but faced the back and never heard a thing. the key to a quiet life in the east village is to have a non street facing apartment.

Ave A is loud because it is the preferred route for emergency vehicles. Also delivery trucks. First avenue is loud too. Ave B is actually fairly quiet because it is narrower. But obviously streets are quieter than avenues. My quitest EV dwelling was on 10th street (in the front) between 1st and A; just about halfway in the block so actually did not got much avenue noise. And there are very few bars on that block. Another factor to consider: all other things held equal plaster walls will block neighbor noise much better than clapboard. Also, top floor is nice because you avoid footfalls -- unless of course the roof is a party scene. Best to go to the apartment if you can several times... DON'T assume the Sunday afternoon OH is typical! That's when we vampires are sleeping.

Careful getting over near D. Gets pretty dodgy. GO take a stroll at night if you're considering over there. Not the nicest.

how about applying some logic: if you want a quiet apartment, don't move to the east village.
