Discussion about
All other things equal, eg be on 5th Ave facing the Park or CPW facing the Park. Mostly a question of light, morning or afternoon.
In terms of light, your choice is blaring sun in the morning vs. blaring sun in the afternoon. Depends on your preference on that, and on sunrises vs. sunsets. I personally prefer sunsets.
Surrounding the park, I think there is an inverse relationship between light/views & neighborhood quality.
CPN. Best view: full park, full east & west & midtown skyline. Southern light. Worst neighborhood.
CPS. Second-best view: missing midtown skyline compared to CPN, but full-length view of park. Solid northern light, which is less bright than direct sunlight, but more even & practical -- there's a reason artist ateliers always face north. Neighborhood better than CPN, but inferior to 5th Ave & CPW.
5th Ave. Third-best view: side-view of park, facing prettier CPW buildings. Nice sunset light. Neighborhood better than CPS, but stuffy and far from daily retail.
CPW. Worst view: side-view of park, facing more-mundane 5th Ave buildings. Morning light. Neighborhood is best.
I prefer the evening light. There's something peaceful about the setting sun.
Looks like the OP asked a simple question. Leave it to inododo to show how smart he is on other topics.
so you prefer to be riversider?
BE Riversider? No, I'm going to stick with being me.
and how many others?
Hey columbiacounty, which direction do you face? Do you have a Hudson view facing west? Or are you looking over at Mass?
what do you think, stupid?
Oh, I don't know, maybe inododo can come here and give me a detailed analysis.
Hburg, why not try to help op?
Fine.
I'm no fan of the direct morning light.
North / northwest are preferred.
Op, 5th avenue is stuffier and further away from transportation but more peaceful than cpw .
so mercer...your idea of being helpful is to repeat other posts?
Wow, you are just as dense as inododo. You can live on 5th avenue and face east, and on CPW and face west.
Columbiacounty and I are in agreement once again.
Western sun is brutal, especially in the summer. You'd probably have your shades down in the afternoon, so you wouldn't even be enjoying the view.
I had one apartment with a western view of the Empire State building - didn't really see it most of the summer months because the sun was just too strong to leave the shades up.
Now have both eastern and western light. There's something very nice about the eastern light in the morning - strong but not burning.
Though having said that I think the views from Fifth facing the fanciful towers of CPW are wonderful.
I think in much of Manhattan, east vs. west is the "wrong" question. That's because they very often come facing an Avenue. Obviously, there are many exceptions: much of downtown, by the river, mid-block towers higher than the rest of the neighborhood, etc. Not that anything is perfect: all those park-facing apts are not exactly on quiet streets. Obviously, they're not 2nd Ave but still busier than most north- or south-facing apts in the city.
I like northern views because the other directions mean that the hot sun is baking your room too much. West would be my second choice since it keeps things bright until late in the evening. My apartment now has both north and west views, which is perfect -- or would be if it didn't also let *noise* in on two fronts!
only two exposures in your crappy penthouse? loser
ph41 didn't say only two exposures -- she said "eastern and western light". But she's at work most of the time anyway, not sitting around her apartment like some housewife who hasn't worked in 15 years.
Next time I will ask with voting buttons, but thanks to those who gave input.

ph41 you are right about western and even southern brutal sun but here is how you would deal with it,
lower your shades but still see out. http://www.horizonyc.com/products/Solar-Shades-1
Those shades come in different degrees of openness (1% 3% 5% 10%) depending on the amount of sun you have.
If you have any questions about shades you can email me via my profile (TomVatury)
I'm going to guess based on digging up old posts to hype shades, that Tom is a window treatment seller / spammer... ugh
We have solar shades in our current place, and I like them a lot. Even with them down you can still see outside. Only downside is that they are see-through at night, so if it was a bedroom you'd need to get drapes or thicker shades to go over them.
This was the OP that inododo called racist just because they didn't want to live with kids. Later inododo we went on to tell us how certain races are prone to being "heavier" without ever identifying those races.
East facing here with lots of morning sun then get reflected afternoon sun from windows of some other building. Best of all possible NYC worlds!

Why is he a spammer if he posted on a relevant thread?
