Are there buildings that restrict kids, eg for mature adults without kids, except limited visitors?

First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

You said, "For that matter, why not discriminate against larger-set people based on the elevator excuse? Maybe it'd be best to just cross out all races that tend to be heavier,"

Which race(s) tends to be heavier?

sounds like ino is conflicted on this issue, and his situation is not clear cut one way or the other. possibly he lives with his sister or brother and her/his kids? either way he shows no bias, hence can be a mediator here.

I like the idea of a no kid building. Kids, like dogs, get soft sleeping indoors. Our building allows kids but we still make our daughter sleep on the terrace. Sure, she complains endlessly, especially when it rains hard or it gets really cold but at least she's complaining about something legitimate.

Looks like I’ve attracted some of my own Internet crazies, idiots, Tourette patients, and mouth foamers, and then this thread attracted a troll chorus.  Enough.  This isn’t a moral matter.  The law, evidenced by the gaping exception allowing for specific communities for over 55, clearly doesn’t view this as a moral matter either. There’s no exception to the civil rights laws to allow for a community that’s all white or all Protestant or all American-born, if certain conditions are met.  So enough.  We had kids, we raised them right, we did our duty for the kids, and now, until it becomes time to be grandparents receiving grandkids visitors, want to be in a calmer building if we move to NYC.  Some people don’t move to Park Slope because they don’t like all of the strollers.  Others here I’ve seen asking about the school nearby and how much noise that creates.   We have a normal preference.  This is not a moral or ethical matter.  Nobody would be marching on Selma Alabama here.

It seems anyway from some of the more valuable feedback that you could find a small-mid sized co-op, higher end but with limited amenities.  Perhaps having no playroom, etc. self-selects, without being overt as the buildings that are specifically child friendly attract more than their fair share.  Double edged sword, but townhouses, or being a bit farther away from subways.

For the poster who asked, Eumendides is a joke from my wife, who taught English.  Euripides these pants, Eumendides these pants.  Nothing else.  We didn’t want to use our name here, which now seems smart given some of the responses.

Budget is $1.2 to $1.5 cash.

"This is not a moral or ethical matter. "

I am not sure why YOU are foaming at the mouth. The comments have all been about how stupid it is to specifically ask if a building illegally discriminates. I don't see many posts about morality at all, just posts about the illegality of it. I hate kids too.

Eumendides, there's a difference between self-selection and discrimination. You were asking about the latter, and when you were told of its illegality, you just didn't give a shit. After 25 years of never facing "No, you may not live in this apt/house/area/town because you have kids" or "We won't hire you because you have kids", blissfully ignorant of the laws that provide you protection all those years from such discrimination, now you don't care because you are on the other side. Great lesson for the kids.

Quoted text from the website of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development:

"U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development:. (2012, August 10). Senior Housing: What you should know... http://portal.hud.gov/hudportal/HUD?src=/program_offices/fair_housing_equal_opp/seniors

SENIOR HOUSING EXEMPTION

Although the FHAct was amended in 1988 to prohibit discrimination on the basis of disability and familial status, Congress intended to preserve housing specifically designed to meet the needs of senior citizens. Housing that meets the FHAct definition of housing for older persons is exempt from the law's familial status requirements, provided that:

- HUD has determined that the dwelling is specifically designed for and occupied by elderly persons under a Federal, State or local government program or
- It is occupied solely by persons who are 62 or older or
- It houses at least one person who is 55 or older in at least 80 percent of the occupied units, and adheres to a policy that demonstrates intent to house persons who are 55 or older.

Therefore, housing that satisfies the legal definition of senior housing or housing for older persons described above, can legally exclude families with children."

Oy, is this thread still going?

The answer is: No. There are no buildings prohibiting children as residents.
It would be discrimination against parents.

The OP doesn't want to be referred to as a "senior" or live in "senior housing".
He is a "mature adult, 55+".
Not a senior. Not elderly.

I don't see where he states that he "hates" kids.

I don't have kids. I don't hate kids. I enjoyed seeing the kids in my former building grow from infants just home from the hospital, to toddlers and pre-schoolers.
Very cute.

Maybe the OP can resign himself to knowing that he's not elderly yet not young anymore.
Wait for the next elevator without strollers in it.
Most co-ops have rules against kids playing in the hallways.
Kids and parents need to enter and exit the building. So maybe kids make noise as they come and go.
Mostly, they are asleep at night and in pre-school and kiddie activities during the day.

I'm younger than the OP. But I'm not yet a 55+
I look forward to the senior discount. When does it kick in?
55, 55+, 62, 65?

Oh, my.
inonada is calling out the Eumendides. Are you trying to start an interpersonal dispute with him?

He and Mrs. Eumendides are just asking questions here.
They are not elderly but are mature adults. 55+.

They can buy in a building that has smaller studio and one-bedroom apts. Those apts formerly were the preferred residence of singles without children. When a child came into the picture, the parent(s) sold the apt.
These days, those apts may be inhabited by a couple or a single parent with a child, having a converted "bedroom". ( usually carved out of the L-shaped living room/dinette area.)

If you find a building that you'd like to live in, just avoid the kiddie mash-up by letting the elevator go and wait for the next elevator, if there are strollers inside:
the only close quarters that you may get crowded into with children.

.

Let's just face it already: It's lose-lose all around, any way you dice it or slice it.

. If the kid screams/shrieks/wails in the hallway & they get dirty looks from the resident curmudgeon(s) the parents of course instantly hate him/her.

. If the kid screams/shrieks/wails in the hallway & they get a smile from a resident, the parents are convinced that he/she is a pedophile.

Best course of action: Move yourself & your children into a nursery school with extended stay sleepover accomodations.

Your kids will be safe, protected from all the demons known to reside in those big, wicked city buildings.

After all...nothing bad ever happens in the schools...right?

"Stoned Soul Picnic" was a song from 1968. The most known version of the song was recorded by The 5th Dimension, and was the first single released from their album of the same title.

Here I'll try a more main stream refrence: "It's the 'age' of aquarius".

Secondly-I googled "Fifth Dimension Surrey" - & VOILA! There was the song...THAT I SWEAR I NEVER HEARD OR HEARD OF! (Where was ?!?)

Falcogold1: Thanks for the answer, which, had I seen it first, would have saved me from googling it. I still can't believe I don't know that song (but why?)

Beautiful Balloon, Last Night, One Less Bell, Aquarius...those I all know & remember very, very well (especially Beautiful Balloon, which we were forced into learning to sing for 6th grade assembly...ugh...) Alas, at this advanced age, my balloon has long ago deflated, & is no longer up, up...but definitely away.

And, curiously, Truth: What made you mention Jackson Hole?

walpurgis: you are not worse off.
You live in Murray Hill along with the fratty 20-30- somethings.
You put up with the youthful fun and don't really complain. You make good fun of it.

No, you and Eumendides were not thrown out of Jackson Hole. You guys jumped up on the bar and did the Hump-D dance. They were throwing dollar bills at you.
Mrs. Eumendides had to go over there to get her husband out. They had early appointments to look at apartments the next day.

What will Eumendides do when he sees old dogs being pushed in kiddie-strollers?! (a new trend).
He should look for no-dog apt. buildings. Those are not illegal.

"Thank you, Irving. I love your plaza!":
(Ray Davies, still rockin' in his 60s, at the encore on the last night of his 3-day run of concerts at Irving Plaza.)

Thanks, Truth. It's just that living in Murray amongst

aforementioned demographic makes me all the more age

aware (of my own, I mean.)

And ANYONE - & I do mean ANYONE - throwing dollar bills at me at a bar would only be doing so IN AN ATTEMPT AT BRIBING ME TO LEAVE!

But thanks for the vote of confidence nonetheless!

Thanks again-I'll try my best!

Gotta go now- a neighbor & I have reservations at C. Nile's - the 1st New York branch of a soft foods restaurant chain that's had much success in southern Florida. Just gotta love their slogan, too: "Every dish-just like a knish!"

Poor Mrs. Stahl, wherever she is...

We have to rush because they close at 08:00PM (normally 06:00PM but it IS Saturday night, after all.)

Have a great night!

I wish there was a building that prohibited stupid people. But if there was such a building, it would be 99% empty!

I can't believe all this time has passed and inododo hasn't named the "races that tend to be heavier."

Which would be the opposite of what socialism wants, right?
