Discussion about
I found a contractor that I like and is knowledgable. He showed me his General Contractor license issued by the DOB. However, I know that there is also a home improvement contractor license issued by the Dept. of Consumer Affairs. Does anybody know the difference? He does not have the DCA license and I have yet to hear back from the Super if he is good to work for me. Any help is appreciated.

Howard,
The DoB does not issue General Contractor licenses;they have a registration process and give out "tracking numbers" which the contractor must have to obtain a Work Permit.Any person or company doing work in a residence, where the value of the work exceeds $300. is required by N.Y.C. Consumer Affairs to have a Home Improvement Contractors license, unless they are a licensed plumber, electrician, welder etc.BTW, if your work requires a permit, the DoB is not supposed to issue a permit for residential work, without seeing proof that the contractor holds an H.I.C. license. You also should ask for workers comp and liability insurance certs. from anyone you are planning to hire.Hope this clarifies things.
