Tile height in bathroom?

Discussion about
I am currently renovating my bathroom with wall tile that is 10" tall and 24" wide. The tile showroom showed a mockup with 4 wall tiles stacked horizontally with 2" trim on top, making 42.5" or so high with grouting. My contractors today said that when they do bathrooms 48" was typically the standard. To achieve the 48" they had anticipated using a 5th wall tile and cutting the one closest to the floor down to 6" or to achieve the desired result. I was wondering if that's true or if there's no hard and fast rule. I feel like 42" is probably in the ballpark of what looks good and not having to cut tile would probably be ideal overall. Appreciate any thoughts or insight. Thanks.

We just did that. Cutting tile is no big deal. I'd suggest cutting tile in half at 5" so that there's no waste and your final height will be 47".

Sounds like really dumb advise to cut at 6", I'd question the knowledge/ability of whoever suggested that.

Also 42" is fine. Depends on ceiling height and what you will do with wall above tile.

Oversized tiles look very cheap, in my opinion.

Nothing looks classier than subway tile.

Thanks. Well unfortunately tile is purchased so done is done. Ceiling height is 8 feet and we're planning on painting the rest of the wall above the tile. ieb -- does that change your view as to 42" vs. 47"?

With 96" ceilings, I'd stick with 42" of tile. Having exactly half of each material (+/- 1") would look odd to me. I also think having four courses of full tile will look much better than 4.5 courses.

Thanks -- I was leaning toward 42" anyways. On a related note, where on earth should the medicine cabinet go? It's a 26" tall medicine cabinet and I've been advised that it usually looks best for the tile to go up to the bottom of the medicine cabinet. But doing that with 42" tile means the medicine cabinet is probably a bit too low. I presume it's ok if there's a couple inches of painted wall between the tile trim and the start of the medicine cabinet?

This is where plans are helpful and time is saved. Do 42". Med. cab will not look terrible 2" above tile line.

When in doubt, apply the golden ratio.

8 feet by (1.618) = 4.94 feet

Techno, just make sure there are tiles on top of your sink to avoid water splash.

Technorat,

I would ask the contractor to draw it out on the wall first, once the tiles are up its to late. I think it always looks better when using full tiles, I would look to see what 4 and 5 full tiles would look like including the grout lines

Back in Barcelona now, after going to the coast for a week.
I was in Italy in June.
If I had known you were going to Italy I would have gone back to meet you there.
We could have gone on an architecture appreciation excursion.
But not at 5am.
More likely, Your wife and I would be out on a clothing appreciation excursion.
