If downtown is convenient, here's somebody you might consider:

Your mileage may vary. A lot comes down to personal chemistry, so trust your instincts when you interview attorneys.

I'll assume you are a buyer. Ask your friends and business associates for personal recommendations. Whomever you go to, ask how many closings they have done in the last year/5 years of the type you are interested in (e.g. new construction condo, coop, etc). This is a major purchase for you and you don't want a lawyer cutting his/her teeth on your deal. They should be knowledged enough to do the deal with their eyes closing, but also savvy enough to go into looking for the slightest detail that can become a problem. A general practice lawyer in Syosset may end up being okay for your Manhattan coop purchase, but it may also be a disaster. You'll want to ask how available the lawyer will be for very speedy due diligence inquiries after an offer is accepted? Ask how long to expect it to take for the attorney to return your calls. If bidding is imminent, ask if any significant vacation time is scheduled when the attorney will be away. What about upcoming trials that will take the attorney out of commission? Out of city depositions and the like? Basically, you need someone who has expertise, who is around and who is available to you.

If you are a seller, a lot less is required of the attorney but experience is obviously still needed.

If you are neither but are instead asking because you have a litigation issue, then a different set of skills are needed.

If you would like to be more specific about your needs, others may be able to chime in with helpful info.

kylewest hanks - i am a buyer; i just was hoping that some buyers could provide references; i have had bad experience with one lawyer who ended up being incompetent; so was looking if others had people they really trusted and/or were happy with

I've used Richard Cohen twice. He is excellent. He has represented me as a buyer and a seller of a FSBO. Highly recommend him, he's in mid-town on Madison Aven

thanks - do you know his charge for handling a sale on behalf of the buyer? Also do you have his number?

newbie08: you'll encounter less confusion if you refer to your needs as wanting "an attorney to represent you in the purchase" of an apartment. To say your lawyer will be handling "a sale on behalf of the buyer" is pretty garbled. Referrals are fine from here, but you really don't know who anyone on here is. Personal referrals are best. Understanding what is reasonable to expect from an attorney and what is common or unusual in such transactions are topics that you may discuss on here to gain broader knowledge.
