Discussion about
We rent in a large all rental building. We are starting to see five renters in some of the two bedrooms. In other words, two people in each bedroom, and one person in the living room. On one hand, I feel like it's none of my business. On the other hand, I feel like next month there will be six or even eight people per apartment then ten etc ... Anyone else seeing this in their building? I wonder how you might be thinking about this ... Thanks ...

i think it's only your business if you are personally affected. personally affected is what you think it is. if you're on streeteasy asking the question, it bothers you. you can tell the LL (and risk your neighbors finding out and being pissed off at you) or you can move when your lease renews.

if it were me, i would only mention it to the LL if it was super noisy (which has nothing to do with the number of tenants - one person can make too much noise).

Can you clarify? Is this mother, father, two young kids, and a baby? Or something else?

Rent is expensive, and people have to make a living. If these excessive people are causing problems report them, if they are not causing problems let them be.

If the landlord gives permission in the lease for 5 renters to live in the apartment,
then it seems that maybe 2 couples to each bedroom and one renter sleeping in the living room sofabed
doesn't sound too excessive.

Maybe in a few months there will be enough male renters in that apartment for a minion.

Can imagine possible crowding issues in laundry/fitness room if this predominated. But plenty of families of four live in two-bedroom apartments and are happy to have that much.

ab, you felt the building was getting too crowded & you moved, fine. You needn't insult Mexicans in the bargain. What is your ethnic background so we can now insult them.

Hi guys lets take the negativity out but there are occupancy laws against this if you notice it and it does personally affect you than you can file a report

See, this is what I mean when I say you need a decent apartment. A decent landlord shouldn't allow this.

Doesn't NYC have over-crowding or occupancy limit laws for residential properties? I know there are some for Commercial. Might be worth checking out...

80 sq ft per person. DOB doesn't do anything even if complaints are being filed. Once there's a fire in the area, then they come and investigate.

wow in which part of the city? in our building there is only 1 family of 6 living in a 2 Bd (couple with 4 young kids) and another family of 5 also in a 2 Bd (couple with 2 young kids and grandma providing childcare, cooking and cleaning 24x7). we are only 3 on a similar sized 2Bd and don't think we could put up with having so little personal space. would prefer to move out of Manhattan and get more elbow room, but it's about personal preferences.
