"can't believe people will decide their vote depending on gay rights. come on! people are starving, losing their jobs, innocent foreign children are being slaughtered by our army, and what you care about is gay rights"

Yes, unless you happen to be gay or lesbian. Such an ignorant comment. Dare you to say that about blacks or women.

Next I am going to hear that Reagan was a bad president from all these liberals. He led ou out of a recession, the Cold War and put America on top as the only Super Power.

Romney reminds me a lot if Reagan. A man that will get things done

Bush's record is off limits to all Reps "Leave Bush alone". "Don't blame Bush". But they got such a hard-on for Reagan...no one is allowed to talk about the record of the most recent former President. But a President that was in office approx 30 years ago is fair game.

luc--re defense/foreign policy, he has already surrounded himself with many of the same loser neo-cons who put us in iraq, while bin laden sashayed out to backdoor of tora-bora--the sane neocons who ignored the memo warning of 9/11--the same neocons who ignored the more serious warnings they were provided by intelligence all of spring/summer 2011--in case you didnt read last week:

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/11/opinion/the-bush-white-house-was-deaf-to-9-11-warnings.html?_r=0

of course, as it turns out, now that we have seen more info, the memo we know of, as released to the 9/11 commission was more of an historical perspective, and that memo was specifically requested bu condi, who ultimately testified that it wasnt a direct warning. well there were memos all spring/summer that were direct, powerful warnings. those werent released to the commission for "national security" reasons.

These are the same scum romney is already surrounding himself with.

I recall very vividly the moment of silence we held at the State Department in August of 2001 for those who had already fallen victim to Osama bin Laden. This was before September 11, and the entire foreign policy establishment was aware of the threat from OBL. Imagine if somebody followed you around day and night, sent you letters, left messages on your VM, sent you e-mails, saying "coming to get you . . . maybe here, maybe there, no over there!" I just don't see this as a partisan issue. The people who staff the embassies and the provide intelligence and make decisions whether to send additional security to post are generally the same individuals regardless of who is in the oval office, and very few issues in the day-to-day operation of FP get escalated to the political level. Biden tried to make this point in the VP debate, but his inability to articulate it was a disaster. I don't blame Team Romney for seizing on the issue, and as a member of Team Obama, I am fine with Romney dedicating more resources to trying to make his point because that gives him less time to make his case about the role of the government and the economy, which is what I think this election is about for the vast majority of the population.

P.S. to Lucille - no kids here.

i agree with this, it's disturbing to see the ways attacks and casualties could have been prevented in hindsight, but ultimately these things happen and will continue to happen. not sure why this is suddenly about bush considering he has been out of office for 4 years. and the man challenging president obama is called ROMNEY. with an R.

much of what is "remembered" of reagan has beeen recrafted and sanitized

while he did have the "class" to call for national unity following carter's failed iaranian embassy hostage rescue attempt, gop worked to subvert negotiations (at expense until after the election

romney, of course, attacked obama erroneously while the libyan consulate was still under attack--classless AND dumb!

no cant make up that the neocons were able to keep this shit under wraps for so many years--and that they succeeded in only releasing info that make arguable the fact that they were plenty warned well in advance and chose to ignore--quite relevant given current context of gop fellatious (sp.) criticism that obama ignored and shirked responsibilty re security issues at libyan consulate

quite "offensive", in fact

The debate was a televised non-contact verbal boxing match.
It was interesting to watch them both decide when to approach each other, upstage, circle around and
try to stay within 4 feet away from each other.

When they were pointing at each other their fingers crossed the comfort zone.
A few times there was a near-miss into the within 2 feet away zone.

They rehearsed those moves with one of their team.
Like Dancing with The Stars.

caonima, my point is that the individual who makes gay/lesbian issue their top priority MOST LIKELY is gay/lesbian. So for a minority group upon whom open-season has been declared time and again by conservatives and other disgusting, bigoted group such as the Christian "Right" it stands to reason THAT THIS WOULD BE THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE FOR THAT PERSON. Maybe you've never had your very existence threatened physically or legislatively but it's logical that such individuals would be concerned about self-preservation before taxes, defense, etc. My point re: woman/blacks: ask your avg African American what they were most concerned with in 1968. I'm sure it wasn't taxes. It was Civil Rights.

"Maybe you've never had your very existence threatened physically or legislatively"

i would always vote in support of gay marriage on a local level in any referendum, but in this particular election this issue just cannot enter into my decision making. having said that, i dont see how a romney presidency will threaten your existence, physically OR legislatively. while romney supports a constitutional amendment to define marriage as between a man and a woman, a potus can't amend the constitution. only the house and senate can - meaning your locally elected government representatives. and he does support civil unions, but i understand that may not be enough. and having said all THAT, in 1968, african americans were concerned with having the right to vote, to be equal CITIZENS in the eyes of the law. i support gay marriage personally and with my vote, when possible, but i think you do this cause a disservice by comparing it to the civil rights movement.

"but i think you do this cause a disservice by comparing it to the civil rights movement. "
With all due respect, you are out of your mind. It is a fundamental Civil rights issue...the right to marry, the right to inherit, the right to not be discriminated against. It's racist to ascribe the term "Civil Rights" to the struggles of African Americans only. Gays/lesbians are NOT, in 2012, equal CITIZENS. This is just as disgusting when the Reps raked Theresa Heinz (wife of John Kerry) over the coals for claiming she was African American due to the fact she was born and raised in S. Africa....I guess Africans can't be white??

"i dont see how a romney presidency will threaten your existence"
Really?? How about by appointing conservative judges to the Supreme Court.

Open your eyes, your minority rights as a woman may be next on the chopping block.

i am pro choice. as far as women's reproductive rights, he believes roe.v.wade should be overturned. to do this he would have to wait for all 3 of the next judges to retire, to retire. these judges are ginsburg, scalia and kennedy. scalia is conservative and kennedy is a centrist on abortion.

"Kennedy upheld a restriction on abortion for minors that required both parents to be notified about the procedure."

" According to court insiders, Kennedy had reportedly considered overturning Roe, but in the end decided to uphold restrictions while affirming the Roe precedent"

he at least considered overturning it. in reality women are only loosing ginsburg and half of kennedy. im willing to gamble on this. but i respect the decision and vote of those who would not.

Are a complete moron? The right was all about a big polling conspiracy two weeks ago. But in the land of reality, as both links clearly stated, the problems with Gallups polls for the last several elections ONLY start when the switch from registered to likely voters. Which this year they did THE DAY Romney leaped ahead. That's why.

The Romney agenda is beyond opaque. "I'm gonna create 12M new jobs, I'm cutting taxes and not increasing the national debt. I'm spending more on the military and dispite what I've said in the past...going forward you all better get used to keeping those unwanted babies."
HOW ARE YOU GOING TO DO THIS MR. ROMNEY?
Well for starters...
"Mr. Ryan, Why, anybody can have a brain. That's a very mediocre commodity. Every pusillanimous creature that crawls on the Earth or slinks through slimy seas has a brain. Back where I come from, we have universities, seats of great learning, where men go to become great thinkers. And when they come out, they think deep thoughts and with no more brains than you have. But they have one thing you haven't got: a diploma.
Mr. Cheney, As for you, my galvanized friend, you want a heart. You don't know how lucky you are not to have one. Hearts will never be practical until they can be made unbreakable. Think of how bad you would have felt when you shot your friend in the face or when you found out your daughter was a dyke.
And Mr. Obama, You, my friend, are a victim of disorganized thinking. You are under the unfortunate impression that just because you run away you have no courage; you're confusing courage with wisdom.
So get in my Ballon fast because I sold the emerald city to the Chinese (dispite what I said) and there about dig up the city in the presuit of natural gas. Munckinland is now an iphone factory!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA....."

Romney again appeared Presidential and on the ball on numbers and policy,
but more important and different from the other debates, he actually appeared affable which has always been something he was missing in public. He didn't have that awkward pained smile, he was neither saccharine nor acerbic, the format didn't put him in a position to look like he was in a boxing match, he was close up to Obama and to Schieffer so he didn't have to yell or be obnoxious. And with the benefit of two prior debates, both the candidates and the moderator managed to avoid the problems with the prior moderators (too little, too much) so it was much more overall pleasant. I don't really like to think about who "won" and who "lost" the debate, but I think Romney benefited nicely from the debate and Obama came out neutral - he did fine.

Way to cherry-pick polls Luclille. Gallup has narrowed substanially. And the average of all the polls, per 539, RCP, or Pollster? All have had the race tied for the past three weeks. On average. But you are the type who picks out the one poll each day that most suits you.

"And the average of all the polls, per 539, [actually 538] RCP, or Pollster? All have had the race tied for the past three weeks."

When was the first debate? THREE WEEKS AGO!!!!!! Obama was ahead on average before then, now the polls say they are tied - and have said so since the Mitt-mentum began. Post the first debate.

I am refusing to look at the polls. We are going to find out who wins the election soon enough. For my part, I am simply thrilled to have two candidates on the ballot whom I believe to be of high intellectual ability and pure intention. While I am not casting my vote for Romney, I do believe that he cares immensely about every person in the country, and I don't blame him for saying whatever he feels he needs to to get elected. I am really happy he stepped up his game in the debates and has put the best arguments for his leadership forward so the country can have an honest choice.

Note to Brooks, AR and HB - that back and forth re the typos made me laugh out loud.

I wasn't involved in that back and forth, I just summarized.

I actually realized "back and forth" re you was not appropriate while I was typing it, but I was too lazy to write more, yet here I am, writing more. I've really got to get work done today, so I am going to stay away from the water cooler/SE board. I am on the site so much these days because I am watching certain buildings, and whenever SE alerts me to activity, I come the site to check it, and then get mesmerized by the discussion board.

pure intention? Romney? Which Romney?

his rhetorical sound-bitery goes every which way on anything that matters, as he panders to whichever audience he faces at any given moment

Both MSNBC and Fox says Obama won Iowa and Ohio, and is over 270 votes. 4 more years. Florida and Virginia are just gravy now.

Now let's hope the official count matches the exit polls, so we don't have to hear about the sudden "bad methodology" of the pollsters ... again.

Lucillebluth, I'm glad you're okeh, and I hope all your Staten Island neighbors also did well by Sandy.

Roseanne Barr's 0.01% share of the presidential race in Florida will come perilously close to deciding the victor there. That's the extent of my political analysis. So good night to all.

I'm relieved that Obama won 'cause Romney/Ryan scared the bejeezus out of me but I'm terribly sad that our system is so broken. That's not really the truth, tho ~ the truth is that we are such a polarized nation. I wonder when & how the fever will break.

Whatever you might think of Obama and Romney, you have to hand it to Plouffe and Axelrod. If I ever get into a knife fight in a dark alley, I want those guys on my side.

i'd want rove. he's a fighter, you know he won't run or accept defeat. which is good because im not great in a knife fight.
