Discussion about
I am buying a unit in a new construction with an open kitchen. There are not enough cabinets but there is a space right of the fridge about 4ft wide by 2 ft deep. I would like to have a patnry build in that space rather then using open shelves or something of the sort. How big of a project is that an how much will it cost? Not sure if I want a closet type pantry with one closet door or cabinet type pantry...suggesting/estimates welcome. Also will I need a permission from the board (at the moment controlled by the sponsor). Thanks!
Good idea East. I am dealing with similar issue, but trying to buy a pantry/closed storage for the kitchen and it is impossible as there is little choice or it is very rustic (cottage). If new development maybe you could just work with the company doing the cabinets. THen would be common look and easy. Otherwise, suspect that you'd be looking at around $2000 for a simple custom built pantry.
Good luck!
A pantry is one of my ultimate real estate fantasies. I grew up in a home with a proper pantry ... Mom kept a separate refrigerator/freezer in there ... there were tons of shelves and cabinets ... a huge "project" table ... and room to store bulky cleaning items like vacuum cleaner, carpet scrubber, dust mops, etc. My dad even built a deacon's bench under a window in the pantry so we kids could huddle together on frosty mornings, gazing out at the winter wonderland of valleys below while sipping hot chocolate.
You could just fill in the 4' with standard kitchen pantry cabinets, like this: http://www.kraftmaid.com/products/storage-solutions/kitchen/food/tall-pantry-pull-out.html
2 ft is deep enough that you want drawers to have full access to the space. You will probably want a cabinet door and pull out drawers. We spent about $1,000 to have 4 drawers and 3 shelves built in our 7'x1.5'x 2' pantry. The cabinet door was there already. I would definitely have carpenter divide the pantry in half to help weight bearing of the drawers. 4 ft is very wide.
You should also decide if you want storage for plates, serving pieces, etc. as a 2' depth is definitely enough for storage of those items. However, if you want storage of food items (canned goods, etc) some sort of pullout would work better, as 2' is very deep for finding those items easily.
i would think you could do both types of storage in the 4' space you have.
