Discussion about
Does the avalanche of virtual photos bother anyone else? Love the half sketched guitar in corner in some of them - what's with the guitar - virtual or not?. These photos are really misleading in some instances - huge disservice to potential buyer/renter as it misrepresents information on light and space. Floor plans help correct - but many people don't factor this in. Anyone else disturbed?
very disturbed
Acoustic or Electric?
Here's one with a double bass: http://streeteasy.com/nyc/sale/847466-coop-2-fifth-avenue-greenwich-village-new-york (I've got one in my LR, too, and had thought it was the only one.)
Not misleading as much as distracting. The people creating them never seem to get the perspective right. The furniture is more often over- than under-scaled, so at least not trying to cheat that way.
And before spending money on virtual staging, they should've fixed the dishwasher and misaligned cabinet doors.
To me, these don't count as photos that represent the listing and I pay no attention to them. I'd much rather see photos of the empty space as it is. It's a lot of easier to get a sense of the place. This virtual staging gimmick does a disservice to both seller and buyer. As for floor plans -- still waiting for ELLIMAN to cut the crap and stop posting enlarged floor plans on Streeteasy that force you to click onto their website to see the floor plan in its entirety. As I've said before, I just click on by the Elliman listings now. And there's been more and more listings in the past months with no floor plan at all. I click by those too, because I wonder what they're trying to hide.
i think photos , staged or virtually staged, never give anyone a sense of space. You always have to go see it in person. Throw out the square footage listed and the photos, Online it either looks amazing and large, or it looks crappy and small. Go see it, its the only way to tell if its really for you. BTW, love the title of this post...
Agree that the staged photos are terrible, and potentially misleading. That said, it's often not as egregious as some of the stretching that goes on with 'regular' photos. For example, the photo facing the kitchen sink in this listing: http://streeteasy.com/nyc/sale/846768-coop-118-east-60th-street-lenox-hill-new-york makes it look like you could park a double-wide stroller by the window. In reality, it's a wall-to-wall width of about 7'9" (I've seen it, and agree with the floorplan). The window is about 24" wide.
>> I'd much rather see photos of the empty space as it is. <<
Agreed! I'm not at all interested in trudging through a pile of virtual Bo Concept crap. It's distracting. And ugly. Just show me the empty space. I'll make my own judgements.

Imagine looking like C0lumbia Cl00ney.
I've encountered many "disconcerting" buyers - but have rarely seen ads marketing to them. :)
"Both of the large bedrooms have been equipped with California closets, and the bathrooms have been renovated for the disconcerting buyer."
