I am wondering whether people can have recommendations for a contractor for our reno this summer. I went through all old threads and made a list, but most are apparently no longer in business, or have neither Angie's list reviews or a website. We wish to: replace tub with whirlppol tub, replace vanity (understanding that this might also require tile replacement); remove cabinet over stove, install hood and new stove, perhaps tile kitchen floor and backsplash; refinish HW floors; have built-in bookcases painted, possibly built (don't know if the building of them would be arranged for separately). Our building manager recommended someone who has worked there before, but I was not enthusiastic after our phone conversation--did not seem very professional. We definitely want to get multiple estimates/bids. I'm hoping to get some more recent recommendations/suggestions. Thanks! [less]
Though I've never used him, I've always felt Primer was very professional and helpful on SE. As we all know, you get what you pay for. I think this is his website:
http://primerenovationsnyc.com/
Good luck.
A note about Angie's List. Just like Yelp, when a site allows non-customers to leave reviews, personally, I don't feel that's fair to a business. I have restaurant clients who have horrible opinions about Yelp and contractors about Angie's List.
Just my 2.
George at ProTone did a fine job on our 2B/2BA on the UWS around 5 years ago. Minimal post reno issues and he came right back whenever we needed him. Info:

Vslse65,
Thank you very much.
You're welcome Primer.
Your willingness to help others is something I have come to respect. You may not be the cheapest, but as a photographer, I'm also a firm believer in the "you get what you pay for" philosophy.
Cheers
Vsise,
A photographer? Do you ever give lessons? It is a very big hobby of mine (All the pictures on my site were taken by me). I a always looking to improve on that.
I am not the cheapest overall but I think for what we do we are probably the most reasonable.
For that size of work yo can try
http://www.bakerinteriorsinc.com/
his name is James
Primer,
I consult for a GC in the Hamptons so I know it's challenging to explain pricing to clients sometimes.
Do I give photography lessons? Not really, but there's always a first time for everything.
I looked at your site and the following issues jumped out at me: lighting, barrel distortion (lens distortion), & verticals not being straight. In your field, having good photos are a must imo.
Feel free to contact me if you want to discuss: studio@vlpnyc.com
Cheers.
PS: Apologies to the OP for hijacking the thread.
Vslse,
Lighting is my biggest problem. I will email you tomorrow.
Funny, vslse65... if you were talking to a broker, barrel/lens distortion would be considered a must! ;)
Primer - looking forward to it.
Sonya_D - Yes, there are some photos that are out of control. Let's leave it at that. :)
palomalou, I'd strongly recommend getting in touch with Jean-David Bordonaro at New York French Contractors. His pricing is highly competitive and he's very easy to deal with. You can find a number of recommendations for his work on this site (from people who have actually used his services).
SillySonya declares: "Funny, vslse65... if you were talking to a broker...
She's a nitwit who can't just "leave it at that."
trUth, trUth, trUth. Took Wednesday's pills early.
I would go with Dave Shrem - very detailed job and excellent pricing. Email me AJafri@elliman.com and I will send you his complete contact information.
Of course, palomalo can consult various contractors.
the trollalanhart, whose comment "15 minutes ago" adds nothing to this discussion:
He is drunk, as usual and alone at home at 11:30pm on Tuesday night, 4/30/13.
^^ ^^
^^trollalanhart, at 11:55pm, 4/30/13.^^
He's never done a reno with Primer and you can safely believe that Primer wouldn't want anything to do with the drunken trollalanhart.
You should call Janusz Kowalski from JK Remodeling (914-204-8534) or jkremodeling@optonline.net. I've worked with him on many jobs (I'm an Architect) and he is a great value (good work at a good price).
Thanks to those who contributed suggestions! Yes, I do plan to contact Primer, whose advice has been helpful. Job might be too small/too "middle-class". ;)
I'd second flarf's recommendation on Jean-David. He's excellent. His phone: (212) 744-9518
Palomalou,
I take on many different projects throughout the year. Some large some small, doe with huge budgets and some with very tight budgets. I try to work with within everyones budgets.
Jeff
Mike Chen 646 920-3787. I never remember the name of his company. Mike has done a lot of work for us and our friends. He is honest, professional and does a good job.
Hmmm....Primer, I called you a couple of days ago but received no reply so far to try to set up an appointment to talk about the job. Today when I tried again it said your voicemail was full. Should I e-mail?
King Construction, www.kcgny.com, 646-755-8496
palomalou: Yes, you can e-mail primer.
Jeff gets a lot of phone calls every day. Call and then e-mail if you don't receive a return call from him.
Jeff: Check your voice-mail and if palomalou is correct, there should be a message on it from palomalou.
Jeff is out of the Country on vacation. He has a family and a family-life.
So,e-mail him. He will be back in NYC on July 10th.
Palomalou,
I am out of the country until the July 9th. Emailing would be great as I have wi-fi on occasion. You can email me at primerenovations@mac.com
You can also text me at 646-436--3942
Thnak you Truth
It's all good, Jeff.
It's an unrealistic expectation that you can be on streeteasy discussion boards 24/7, giving advice,
while also having a family life and going on a vacation a couple of weeks each year.
Truth,
I don't think they were being unrealistic. They reached out to me and didn't hear back and asked if ere was a better way to reach me. It's not a big deal.
palomalou did you select a contractor? I am also looking for one as well and would be interested what you decided up going with.
it's unrealistic to expect him to reply your email if your project is small
Primer05, don't call trUth crazy.
Unrealistic expectations are not a big deal.
Alternative ways to reach primer (or anyone else) via an e-mail or text message can be sent.
Primer has posted his e-mail address many times on streeteasy discussion board threads. It's an unrealistic expectation to think that primer is always in NYC working. Everyone is entitled to some time off, away from NYC., without a comment posted starting with a suspicious: "Hmmm..."
Jeff: I don't see any indication that you "call(ed) me crazy".
Why is the troll alanhart posting a comment on this thread attempting to start an argument, as usual?
Truth,
I did not nor do I think you are crazy. I try to get intouch with everyone who calls or emails me. If someone has or does reach out to me and I do not respond please either email me again or call.
Primer took more time out from his family vacation to clarify and point out that the troll alanhart
(as usual) tried to start another argument with me on se discussion boards.
Jeff tries his best to respond to those who contact him:
leave a message if your call goes into his voicemail and if his voicemail is full you can also e-mail/text him.
It's 2013 and voicemail messages/e-mails/text messages are options available to all, especially those who are internet-savvy enough to post comments here on streeteasy discussion threads.
Tedbearz, We are going to meet with a couple Wednesday. Primer might be out of the picture because of his not being in the country. We have 6 weeks to try to get this done, including time I need to apply to the board and wait for their approval. If it takes longer, we'd have to split the job up. If all indicators and our gut say we'd be uncomfortable in any way with one of the our first interviews/estimates, we will certainly contact Jeff. And if we didn't want to try to meet with him, I would have just picked the first three good companies/contractors I reached. I wouldn't have tried this method of contacting him. And yes, of course everyone deserves a family and personal life! I did not mean to imply negligence on his part.
O.K., palomalou.
Jeff will be back on July 9th, as he stated in his comment.
You were cutting it a bit short, in terms of the time-frame to contact and set meetings with contractors
(for the 6-week time period you stated that you need to get it done).
If you had contacted Jeff, nine weeks ago, I'm sure he would have returned your call and checked-out your job,
well before he left the country to go on vacation with his family.
Good luck with your reno. Hope all works out well for you.
I hope you're a much much better unwanted unofficial unauthorized volunteer spokesman on the moldy oldies circuit than you are for primer.
^^alanhart is now trolling me on three threads, looking to start a fight, as usual:
6:49pm EST 7/1/13
then take the fight, don't chicken
