Discussion about
I would like to have my Bathtub refinished. I would appreciate any recomendations or advice.
I am about to use Lik-Nu based on Long Island:
http://www.liknu.com/
They were recommended by my architect and super and were used in a few other apts in my bldg. Will let you know how the job comes out on Thursday. The current tub is a real mess.
I used this guy about 2 years ago
Fancy Dom in Brooklyn

Did a great job for a reasonable price.
EARO-- Looking forward to your feedback.
JGREGORIE-- Fancy Dom looks very "old school"
All-- Just a follow-up. I used Fancy Dom to refinish my tub in June. He provided all the necessary insurance paperwork for the management company and did a very good job for a reasonable price of $325. The job is 6 months old and looks great. I would recommend him --
Please know that most of the tub refinishing companies require the home owner to remove the tape and overspray paper a day after the job is completed.
I have a 60 year old cast iron, deep tub in bad shape. How long does the refinishing last? A decorator told me it only lasts a few years and wasn't worth it if you planned to stay in the place a long time. A contractor told me it would last 15 years.
I had the tub reglazed last year and is good so far. Make sure you use soft scrub to clean. Other cleaning agents may not work. We used formula 409 and it did absolutely nothing. Once switched to soft scrub, all the stains came right off easily.
Soft Scrub does a great job on the existing, old tub. The contractor suggested using the product while I'm thinking over my options.
If you like the size and shape of your tub I think its totally worth it to go with a reglazeing. My tub was hideous pepto bismol pink but I like'd the shape and depth of it. Fancy Dom came in on the last day of my renovation and painted it what he called "american standard white" when the tape came off I was blown away by the results. As stated above its been about 3 years now since I had my tub done and it still looks great. The only thing you need to be careful of is metal objects chipping the paint. Last month I changed out the shower curtain rod and it slipped out of my hand and left a tic tac sized ding on the top of the tub. During the course of my research I also heard that if you wash a large dog in your tub its claws could potentially chip the paint as well. As far as cleaning goes I don't use any special products just fantastic with bleach and a regular sponge. If it does start to deteriorate in a few years I will just have it reglazed again.
jgregorie: Thanks for the info on the chipping. This refinished product seems to be more fragile than a new tub. I looked at the Fancy Dom's video on refinishing the tub and it's quite a procedure that I wouldn't want to go through in a bathroom without a window. I discovered that I can get a new Kohler cast iron soaker tub for under $700. I think that makes more sense for me.
Yeah it was totally a monetary decision for me.
The biggest thing I learned during the course of my kitchen and bathroom renovation was that materials took up about 30% of my budget and labour the other 70%
reglazeing =$350
new kohler tub = $700 + delivery of new tub $150 + removal of old tub $800 + contractor to install new tub $1000 + plumber to connect new tub $600 etc etc etc. It adds up quick just keep that in mind and will add a few days to your schedule. Also its well within the realm of possibility you will hear something along the lines of " Yeah sorry the tub that was delivered cant fit through the bathroom door " unexpected stuff like that happens all the time, Especially when you are doing renovations in 100+ year old building.
If I had a bigger budget I would have ripped out my old tub and but in one of those nice luxury showers with a rainfall shower head coming out of the ceiling.
