Discussion about
For the purposes of this report I'm defining Midtown East as 34th to 59th Street, 5th Avenue to the East River. If you live or work in the area and have additions or corrections, feel free to add them. -- TD Bank currently under construction at 57th and Third. -- TD Bank opened a couple of weeks ago at First and 56th. -- Paname French Restaurant opened recently on Second between 56th and 57th. --... Are you allowed to unilaterally define the boundaries? Shouldn't this be down to 23rd, as per SE and most people.

I'm sure this is very helpful for people deciding to buy RE based on bank branch openings...

If you edge the boundary over a little, the office building at 1414 6th Avenue will soon become a luxury One Hotel by Starwood.

The Staples that used to be in the building is going to become a mega steakhouse.

Or so the rumors go . . .

"Are you allowed to unilaterally define the boundaries?"

My thread = My boundaries!

To me anything South of 34th Street is Midtown South.

"I'm sure this is very helpful for people deciding to buy RE based on bank branch openings..."

Since when is anything helpful posted on this forum?? Now do you have anything useful to post??

I guess not.

The only reason ppl live in midtown east is to walk to work. no?

I lived there for 5 years, there really is no 'neigborhood' feel. It does feel safe, can take a long walk to Central park and all popular tourist destinations. But if I didn't work close by, I wouldn't consider it.. feels too transitive

You forgot Whole Foods. It transforms a neighborhood instantly. Or so it's been written.

Midtown South is a police precinct. Midtown East is (more or less) a really great SE poster we haven't heard from for awhile ... but it's not a neighborhood.

I like, however, when permatourists refer to the "Lower West Side" as a neighborhood. It makes something terribly complicated so easy. And the blue line goes there.

Agree too transitive of an area at night it can be dead except on 3rd and 2nd avenue with too much traffic noise!

No, not down to 23rd street at all. Where the heck are you from?

>I'm sure this is very helpful for people deciding to buy RE based on bank branch openings...

TD bank, from Toronto ... exciting, depending on where you are from.

>If you edge the boundary over a little, the office building at 1414 6th Avenue will soon become a luxury One Hotel by Starwood.

6th Avenue and 57th Street isn't midtown east.

>You forgot Whole Foods. It transforms a neighborhood instantly. Or so it's been written.

I agree with aboutready.

>Midtown East is (more or less) a really great SE poster

I disagree with alanhart

"The only reason ppl live in midtown east is to walk to work. no?"

NO. It's one of the reasons and surely improves the quality of life not having to take a bus or the subway twice a day along with the health benefits of walking.

The others are the shopping (Bloomingdale's, Saks, Macy's, and everything else from big box stores, to the finest boutiques, to all the best groceries.) Tons of restaurants, from low to high end; easy access to the 59th Street Bridge and FDR drive to get out of Manhattan, the ability to walk or take a quick taxi ride to theater, museums and some of the best healthcare in the country. Bryant and Central Parks again within a walk or quick taxi or bus ride and with the advent of Citi Bikes next week, everything is within a short bike ride away. All along with one of the safest places in the city to live.

"Wait more banks on the corners.... Shoot! Should have stayed."

People with money live in Midtown East, you can never have enough banks. Glad you left the neighborhood you don't fit the demographic. LOL!

shill away.

it is an unarguable fact that midtown east has been one of the most under-performing sub-markets in the entire city.

Have lived in Midtown East for 11 years and really happy here. From Second Ave east to Sutton is a neighborhood. Small restaurants and neighborhood bars. The UN adds some great people diversity. Minutes to LGA, half hour to JFK.
Home Depot, Bloomingdales, Whole Foods all close. Perfect walk to work area.

Don't forget all the great pubs. Frequently when I poll friends about where to go out I am inundated with suggestions about all the great restaurants and bars in midtown east. And you don't want to be caught out without your best ball cap on. For the 21-24, just moved from the mid-west crowd and the always exciting international bureaucrat, this is THE place to live.

Design Within Reach opening this Fall on 57th & 3RD, above the ubiquitous TD Bank.

http://www.dwr.com/home.do

ANASSA TAVERNA opened on 60th & 3rd. Inspired by the Plaka, a popular district of shops and restaurants in Athens, this casual, traditional place on a busy Midtown corner is by the owners of Avra in Midtown and Tim Pappas, the former general manager at Philippe Chow on the Upper East Side. It even sells Greek trinkets. Seafood dominates the menu.

How are we missing 50 UNP. That mother is going up at breakneck speed. I'm a bit disappointed by the choice of curtain wall. Looked all cool and Hong Kongesqe and bronze in the rendering. But, in reality will just be black glass with stainless stripes.

btw, I know poor Midtown east gets a bad rap, but I love it here. Suppose I'm lucky, less demand, better prices.

Ottawa, dont forget to put that cap on backward. I suppose if I were like 20 years younger I may try to cut one from the heard late on a Thursday night, but the aluminum walker gets in the way at this point.

Toll Brothers Buys Development Site at 953-061 First Ave in NYC
January 3, 2013

Toll Brothers has acquired a Midtown East residential development site at 953-961 First Ave on the west side of First Avenue between 52nd and 53rd Streets.

The property has a land area of 8,822 square feet and offers the investor the opportunity to construct a building with approximately 156,135 square feet.

The site includes acquired development air rights and bonus square footage through the inclusionary housing program. The ready-to-go development site has an existing foundation and DOB-approved plans for a 30-story, 161-unit luxury residential tower.

The property, which can also be developed as luxury condominiums, is one of the few remaining development sites in Manhattan to qualify for the 421a tax abatement program

Here's a biggie for Midtown East.

"Now the first shovels have hit the ground, and the block-front on First Avenue between 35th and 36th Streets will soon be transformed into two curving, copper-clad residential towers, creating some 800 new high-end rental units."

"The First Avenue development, which has not yet been named, broke ground in July and has an expected completion date in early 2016. At 49 and 40 stories, respectively, the towers can be built “as of right,”

"The two buildings bend and connect via a sky bridge, billed as the showstopper, which will feature an indoor lap pool and a lounge area. The development will also have a rooftop deck with an infinity-edge pool, a fitness center, a boxing gym and a squash court. Other amenities include a children’s playroom, a screening room, and a demo kitchen and dining area."
