Co-op Board Interview- What happened?

Discussion about
I applied to buy a co-op and the board contacted management two weeks ago (May 10th) and said they'd like to set up an interview. Management called me with the good news and said they'd call back with a time. It's been two weeks now and still no word. Is this normal? Aren't most interviews set up right away? I called management and the woman said she's been reaching out to the board for a response but ...nothing no far. What could possibly be going on? Thanks.

Nothing more than coop board not being able to set a date to meet. The seller can reach out to one the board members to give you more color.

Members of a coop board are basically unpaid volunteers who usually only meet once a month. They will get around to interviewing you when its convenient for them. Totally not unusual to have to wait a few weeks for an interview to be scheduled.

A lot of boards will meet on the 1st or 2nd particular day (frequently tuesdays) of each month.
Smaller buildings, soemtimes every 2nd month or quarterly.
It's likely the May 10th contact was right after a meeting.
If that's the case they should make an effort to interview you before the next meeting. At the very least tell you whats going on.

Hard to gauge without knowing size of building (how many units). Maybe there are "3 in contracts" and 2 interviews ahead of you for example.

This is also what brokers get paid for. Harass your broker or seller's broker for an answer. But don't put it past the seller either, maybe slowing things down to decide where he/she ends up after closing, trying to squeeze another month.

Thanks everyone for your responses- appreciate it.

Truth- you're right that the May 10th response was right after their monthly meeting (they met on the evening of the 9th apparently). According to management, my application is also the only one being reviewed at the moment. On May 10th when management called, the woman said that the following Tues. or Weds. would be good with the board and then... silence.

Who knows? My girlfriend is worried they're having second thoughts about our application- (hah)..

Thanks again.

That's different, it does sound a tad strange, maybe management mispoke.
I'd be all over the brokers.
I don't know how deep you are in, if your at the interview stage, you already have lawyer fees, sweating locking in a rate (if mortgaging), etc.

A friend of mine was in a similar situation (slow responses contract phase) and I advised him to go the open house of another apartment that seller's broker was having an open house at.
Broker's partner was there instead and I told him "Even better, just make sure you sign the sign in sheet."
2 days later, seller's broker was answering every phone call until closing date.

And edit on previous post, "A lot of boards will meet on the 1st or 2nd WEEK...not DAY

If they've already committed to an interview you really shouldn't worry. In many cases a board will have a smaller group of its members meet applicants and it could simply be that someone's away or they haven't been able to herd all the cats yet.

And keep in mind that most turn-downs happen during the board package/application review stage. The fact that the board has indicated it wants to move forward with an interview means you've already crossed the biggest hurdle.

Hey NewBuyer3

I am on the board of my co-op. We are usually very quick to try to set up an interview. That said, it still takes like 2 weeks of dozens of emails flying around to try to get enough people there, same place, same time, same day. Don't get worried yet.

Thanks, Truth . . contacted the seller's broker and she'll certainly be trying to figure out what's going on but with Memorial Day looming, it's almost certain nothing will be accomplished.

And thanks, bramstar. I know I shouldn't be so concerned, but it's just a bit weird. I've actually heard of a case where a board rejected someone after offering an interview ...you'd think it would open up the board to a lawsuit, but who knows? Just gotta keep waiting...and waiting some more...
