Discussion about
Calling all experts-- I am about to buy a big AC window unit (probably 15,000 BTUs) and assume that I also need to buy a bracket to install it safely. My pre-war building has newish metal window frames, and the sill outside the window is stone (it's a brick building). It seems to me that lots of the brackets I see in Amazon, etc are designed for suburban houses with very different sills, ledges, etc. So I am concerned that i may end up ordering something that won't work on my building. Can anybody here help me out with a specific recommendation of a bracket you've installed in a comparable NYC apt building? Thanks!

Ask your super or maint staff. For 50 bucks they can install for you.

A bracket is required by law in NYC if the building is over 6 floors. Wherever you but the unit will have one, but so will Home Depot or your local hardware store. The "universal brackets" are pretty universal, and many have a built-in bubble level for proper pitch.

Actually some buildings require that ACs be installed professionally. The potential liability from an AC unit falling out if improperly installed (not to say you would install it improperly but not every owner is a DIY person) is more risk than a coop or condo board (or landlord) wants to assume.

Check with your managing agent on what the rules are about AC installation before you move forward.

Thanks so much for the fast replies!

But, I am really asking for recommendations of specific brackets to buy, not for general procedural advice. This is going to be a DIY job, not a get-the-super job. And my building doesn't have a managing agent. Hence my query to the wise members of Streeteasy, whose advice I seek so I can get this job done before it gets any hotter. I could just run over to Home Depot to look, sure, but the packaging on these kinds of items is often not very informative, and it would be extremely annoying to haul a bracket home only to find it won't work. Whereas if I can figure out a brand or style to buy, then I can just order it and let my friendly UPS guy schlep it here.

The brackets I saw in Amazon advertised as "universal" very clearly are not, if you look at the design. Also, several unhappy NYC Amazon purchasers mourned this in their reviews. So, I'm asking again--has anyone recently installed a big AC on a purchased (as opposed to home-made) bracket that they are willing to recommend?

Thanks!

My understanding is that the most danger of the unit falling from the window is while it is being installed so do proceed with extreme caution as you install this big AC.

You might want to decide on a specific air conditioner first, and then shop for the brackets.

E.g., the installation manuals for Freidrichs show you how to easily modify the supplied brackets for different wall thicknesses, etc.

A few brief comments:
I agree with drdrd, especially since this is 15K unit. AFAIK, all window AC units come with adjustable brackets that should work well on a solid stone sill such as yours, perhaps with the addition of shims to insure that the pitch is away from the building. If this window faces a sidewalk or other pedestrian area,I think you would be foolish not to hire an insured installer. This could be a DIY project that with one slip or dropped part, turns into a disaster.

Dolly Parton was rumored to have worn a modified version of one, as it offered the only practical means of support.

So get THAT one - its load bearing capacity would have to be well within your unit's range!
