Discussion about
Hi! I'm closing on a place in about 6 weeks and would love to renovate two bathrooms, as well as do some custom built-ins in the bedroom before I move in. I dont even know where to begin as to finding someone to do this for me. One of the bathrooms needs some walls moved as well, so feel like i need an architect possibly. Can anyone give advice as how to start this project? Thanks!
First, is your apartment a Coop or Condo? You will need permission from your board to do any major work such as you have in mind. I suggest you find yourself a good architect and find out the rules of your specific building.
Agreed with cmist. I can only guess this is a condo- since a co-op would probably would have asked about planned renovations during the board interview and then asked for documentation of the plans. Moving walls could be a major deal if they are load bearing. If this is an older building walls that weren't originally load bearing may be today due to the building settling.
Nymusiclover,
I think I can give you some guidance. Feel free to call me tomorrow at 646-436-3942.

If you haven't picked an architect already, I highly recommend Cutsogeorge Tooman & Allen (I worked with Craig Tooman and Nicole Grosso). I'd never done a reno before -- not a gut, but re-doing kitchen & 2 bathrooms and rejiggering the layout of all the closets -- and they had some excellent suggestions in the planning stages.
I also engaged them for construction administration -- i.e., guidance & handholding during construction -- and again they made it a much less stressful experience than I'd feared. They're not cheap, but they were well worth the cost.
