Can you clarify if you are the evictor or the evictee?

And you are naive enough to judge a thread by the headline?

Surprised your former attorney can't even make a recommendation.

How much were you paying / hour?

Greensdale is here to insult landlords at any chance given, lately within a few hours too! The reason he/she is asking is to be sure he/she does not give you any precious tenant info. But note how he tries to find out the rate LLs pay...

To answer your question, the BEST is Adam Litman Bailey. Expensive, but worth it..

The firm is probably better-known for representing tenants, but they work both sides.

Thanks MAV, I've heard of Bailey, but despite his awards I initially passed since his reviews online were mixed with about four (5 star reviews) placed on the same date at lawyerratingz site, somewhat a red flag.. any personal experiences?

I am aware of the reputation of hmdg that West 81st suggested- but our Board of Managers used them for a deliquent owner of common charges with a terrible result. They billed us and billed us, but ultimately dropped the ball before recommending a different firm. I don't know exactly where the problem was- whether our case just got lost in the shuffle or whether they really didn't want to take the side of potentially foreclosing on an owner, but however you view it, they left us with a huge bill with nothing to show for it.

thanks semerun, not sure if you'd want to publicly divulge, but what is the ballpark for 'huge' bill?

RClavi, you are correct, I can't publicly divulge. We are a small builing, so the cost is pretty hefty to split amongst the owners. I can say this...if hmdg had done what they were supposed to do, there was a reasonable possibility we could have already taken possession of the apartment by now. Instead, the bank moved forward on foreclosing, now it could take another few years before the apartment goes to auction. Not only did they bill us for an astronomical amount and drop the ball- but now we may have to cover this owner's common charges for years while this goes through the foreclosure process with the bank. Generally speaking it's a much faster process for the Condo Association to foreclose rather than a bank to foreclose (roughly 1 year vs. 3+ years for the bank).

you shouldn't be discussing this in this way. you are trashing this firm anonymously, using terms like astronomical with no back up.

this is the worst of the internet at work.

I have the backup, but you are correct in terms of the verbiage used. What is astronomical to us- a small building, might be nothing to a large building. I will say this much, the amount hmdg billed us for (with failure to follow through) is less than the estimate we received from their referral attorney to handle the case from cradle to grave. When you consider the amount of work that was done by hmdg toward this case, they barely scratched the surface-so yes the amount (contextually speaking) had they followed through craddle to grave would have been astronomical compared to what it should have cost.

do you think it's fair for you to post this anonymously?

would you want someone to do this to you?

I wouldn't.

does that make it OK for you to post here?

because they know(?) you're unhappy?

again, i disagree with this type of anonymous assassination.

What about you C0C0, didn't you criticize a broker anonymously because you didn't like a window in the shower?

Disagree all you want- I now gave the board context, let the readers form their own opinions. Just because someone prints something doesn't mean that the same will happen to them- but it is helpful to get an idea of how a law firm treats small clients (even if it is just one small client). If someone is thinking of using this firm (or any firm for that matter)- as a consumer they should ask questions before they sign up as clients- which includes how they service their clients.

of course they should ask questions.

my objection is the nature of anonymous reviews.

maybe your problem with this firm is legitimate and for real.

i don't like the idea that anyone can comment anonymously about identified others.

doesn't seem fair.

can you imagine trying to refute this?

If someone at the firm really wanted to- it wouldn't be terribly difficult to track me down. While my screenname is anonymous- my situation is not. They only handle so many condo association foreclosure cases. More importantly they could have, and should have worked with us to resolve the problems a long time ago. As to your issue of fairness- well that is a two-way street. I don't like trashing individuals or firms- but I will have no hesistation to do so if it was well earned. We originally hired them because we were told they were the best at what they did- and what we got in return was hopefully the exception- but it still doesn't excuse their inaction to address our problems head on as we were promised.

Not to mention that it seems that only C0C0 would give equal credit to an anonymous complaint as to a complaint by a person who does give his or her name.

you're missing the point. its not about tracking you down. its about your cavalier attitude that you are justified in trashing someone publicly without revealing who, what where and when.

if you want to pursue them privately, more power to you.

if you want to reveal the public facts and pursue them publicly, great.

but, you are doing neither.

semerun: Thank you for sharing your experience. Ours was different, obviously. We did have several problems with billing. Ultimately, everything was corrected.
