I am renovating a prewar apartment: rebuilding three walls that were removed by prior tenents (one 14' with cable embedded and the other 10' each, one with a transom above the 36" pocket door) with various outlets, tearing out and replacing the 7'x11' galley kitchen, combining two closets into one, rebuilding a doorway with a transom above it to the master bedroom, replacing all the baseboards, adding picture and crown molding, sanding and restaining/poly the herringbone floors, and repainting/papering the apt. The demo started 10 days ago and things are moving along, but my contractor has just told me that I need to have my paint colors chosen before I go away in a week (returning in two weeks), since they will likely be painting the place during that time. This would be before the kitchen is in or the floors have been sanded, repaired and restained. Is this par for the course, to skimcoat, paint, etc. an apartment before installing a kitchen and redoing the floors? I've always been told that redoing floors is a terribly messy procedure, and these are old herringbone... Thanks for your insight. [less]
I can tell you my contractor did the same thing and after the floors were sanded (teak) all my lovely decorator white walls were orange from the sanding and he refused to do anything about it! It was a huge loft apt with 17' ceilings--so you can imagine the mess left behind. If I were you I would make him aware of the possibility and let him know he insists on painting before floors etc then he is responsible for dusting the walls or making sure they are pristine before the job is ended. Floor guys will always tell you they are the last ones out--but be prepared for the potential for fine sawdust to be on your walls.
Quite sure there's another older thread here where Primer and a few others answered this question. Try search
