Discussion about
I'm planning on renovating my bathroom, which is broken into two very small rooms. One has a tub/sink/mirror and the other has a toilet/sink/mirror. It makes sense to keep the two rooms since there is only one bedroom upstairs (duplex) with two bedrooms that I will somewhat have to share with my daughter. I'm looking to replace everything in the same footprint. I want to do this really high end. Couple questions...I love glass tile - what is your experience with it? does it crack? What are cost estimates to replace all tile. fixtures, tub, vanities, medicine cabinets? And lastly, can anyone recommend a great contractor? Thanks!
nycmusiclover,
If glass tile is put in correctly it shouldn't crack. I would make sure that whoever you use ask them if they are familiar with installing the tile and they should use an anti fracture membrane

As far as prices for Hi-End, it is very subjective. Are you talking about quality of work or the finishes? You can buy a WET tub for $4,000.00 or a nice Duravit for $1,200.00 so the prices can vary.
My typical clients spend around $30,000 for a bathroom renovations. Some would think its Hi-End some might not

I would strike a note of caution about glass tile. In small doses it may still be one's choice for certain accents, but it is already moving toward the dated end of design. It is also expensive to buy and install because it must be done flawlessly or it looks like crap. I think a glass tile bathroom will be rather taste-specific and not something that would appeal to the broadest spectrum of buyers if resale is something that concerns you.
You are talking about total guts if you want "high end" results, I assume. If you want ballpark estimates (which some of us are pretty good at), please describe what you have in mind in terms of materials, design of shower/bath, hardware, lighting, fixtures, etc. Sq footage of each room, too.
what if i use regular glue instead of anti fracture membrane for glass tile?
Caoima,
The glass could crack over time

uh oh, cue the nasty comments from C0lumbiaC0unty against Kyle.
Primer05, why the glass will crack if i use regular epoxy or whatever glue?
NYCmusiclover,
We are going through a renovation now. Not fun.
I suggest you have an architect overseeing the work and filing the DoB permits with the support of an expediter. Interview a number of architects and hire the ones that can provide a good portfolio of work and ones that you feel comfortable with.
When bidding out the job to GCs, the architect will provide you a list; however, you should also bring a number of your own GCs into the mix. One advice on the GCs, make sure they provide you the names of the subs that will do the actual work; some subs are terrible, can do a terrible job and delay the work. And make sure you are completely involved in managing the timelines of the job and not just relying on the GC or architect.
For a list of contractors, check Angie's list or Brownstoners (forum section).
Good luck.
