Discussion about
I want to create an interior room with no central air (i.e. ventilation) or windows. What can I call it and have it approved by the DOB? It's not a bedroom room, and I was told a home office needs some sort of ventilation. It's also too big to be a storage room (plus it has a closet already). Any ideas? Thanks.

Morgue needs to be chilled. I think the place you are thinking about is a crypt. c0lumbiac0unty can confirm.

FirstTimeReno, seriously, we don't want your type in NY. Go to Ohio.

You can expand the existing closet, to a "walk-in closet/dressing room".

Oye vey.. Let's rephrase. I have a partitioned room from the living room, unfortunately it doesn't comply as habitable (and no it's not a morgue!) due to ventilation / natural light reasons. It's going to be used as a home office, but I can't call it that because it has no mechanical ventilation. Any other ideas what I can call it so it'll pass the DOB?

Already told us it is too big to be a storage room. And you can't get dressed in a room with no ventilation.

No need to enable this.

That's what I thought. Go back to Ohio. NYers don't spell it this way.

Oh, just call it a "library". Build some shelving units, go to the Strand bookstore and buy some books.
Use some shelves and drawers to store clothing: shirts, ties, socks, shoes.

Thank you, fieldschester, the correct image is crypt.

The reason for those pesky DOB requirements for dreary things like ventilation, fire escapes, windows, etc., is human comfort, health and safety.

You're going to spend hours at a time sitting in a room with no proper ventilation with the door closed? I hope not. I hope you leave the door open when you're in there.

For the sake of resale, however, I'd add the ventilation or whatever else is needed to call it a Home Office or a Home Occupancy.

Because very few buyers are going to be interested in your crypt. And you will need to sell it some day.

Dark room! Good one. There will be at minimum a ceiling fan. I was looking into the room to room ventilators as well. And yes, the door will remain open for the most part, but wanted the option for privacy...

Make sure you write "dark room" and not "darkroom". Stinky chemicals and no ventilation = bad, and even the DOB knows bad when it reads it.

How many illegal alien children do you plan to cram into it, by the way?

How is it that I've seen some apartments partition their living room to create a bedroom, yet still maintain their 'living room'? Assuming the building has window units and not central air, the living room no longer has direct access to the window or AC unit (ie ventilation) or even natural light. Unless the partition was not permanent and was done without DOB permits?

I appreciate all the real feedback so far.

is it possible not to "classify" it if you were not to put a real door or a door size opening and have a floor to ceiling opening.

i would definitely look into installing something that will provide ventilation from other locations.

"Bonus Room". I have the same thing in my Apt and bought it already completed. It was a large walk-in closet that was expanded into a home office/nursery, has custom built-ins and closing door (with frosted glass panels for light) but not formal ventilation. "Bonus Room" seemed to be the appropriate description.

If you show the wall on the partition plan as temporary, it probably will go unflagged by the Examiner but the Architect signing off on the drawings and special inspection would need to say he/she were ok with that.
