I had 6 recessed lights installed in my living room and only realized afterwards that they compromised the acoustics of my ceiling. I did contact some local sound companies for recommendations. One estimated $15-20k to decouple my ceiling and put up drywall layers with green glue. When I asked for a cheaper solution, he recommended I get an electrician to install Quiet boxes around the lights and then they can pump in insulation. I did some research and apparently these quiet boxes or similar drywall enclosures are the only way to properly sound proof recessed lights. Is there a way to do this without removing the existing ceiling? I also don't believe the light cans are IC rated, as there is currently no insulation in the ceiling. Would most electricians be able to put the boxes in and patch up the ceiling? Any idea about how much it would cost? Thanks! [less]
Might be simplest to remove the fixtures, blow or stuff in the necessary insulation through that hole, and install different fixtures that have the IC rating and/or acoustic shielding of their own. That way you don't have to get into ceiling patching again. I'd be hesitant to have the electrician do the ceiling patching and the insulation. Some part of the job will be mediocre; better to have separate specialists.
That sounds like a good plan. Thanks uptown_joe!
