Discussion about
We purchased a coop built around 1920. The original wood floors have a stenciled edge around them. It has faded away in around 15% of the high traffic areas. The design is very accurate so it seems it was done with some kind of stamp or something. My question is first, what exactly were these designs, was there a time period where they were very fashionable? Or could it have been added at a later time? The floors really need to be sanded and we are concerned about the design getting erased which is upsetting as we hate to eliminate the design. Any ideas on how to save this? Or is it worth saving? Our contractor says there is no way to sand the floors and save the design. Would love some input here. thanks!

We have that in one room of an old farm house from around 1900 in Massachusetts. Very unusual and kind of neat. Put wall-to-tall carpet over it so it's still there if any future owner finds it at least it's preserved.

Call Pratt Institute (in Brooklyn) Career Services, and ask them to send over a student or graduate. Probably a painting major. Tell the student to trace over the old designs, then create new stencils. Decide if you want it to look new or aged. Have them mix paint swatches that match the color you want your new stencils to be. Then take a lot of pictures, especially of the corners. Work out a price per linear foot.

Then refinish the floor.

Then call student back and have them redo your stenciling on new finish. They have very rigorous training at Pratt, and have the technical ability to pull this off. I would trust one of them over the average "faux painter" any day. Don't call SVA or Parsons, those kids are flakes.

Thanks -- great ideas. What about saving the design -- anyone had any experience with this?

Interesting. Most people I know never check their mail, so they need to be reminded to do so.

Hi GWC,

Send me an email -- and please put "streeteasy" in the subject line so I can find it.
