Discussion about
I've avoided putting a carpet on my studio floor (coop requires carpeting covering 80% of the floor space), but the neighbor below me is complaining about the noise so now I need to have carpeting. Any suggestions for a cheap and easy solution? Which Manhattan stores or online vendors provide the best options? My studio measures about 15' x 12'. Would prefer not to hire someone to install wall-to-wall carpeting.
Calvin, is this in NYC or in C0lumbia C0unty?
Go to ABC Carpet and Home -- across the street where they exclusively sell carpeting. Ask to see their remnants. You can get a really good quality piece of carpet, like Karastan or the like, for next to nothing for a small space like that. They might even throw in a piece of padding (make sure it's minimum 1/2" thick) for the asking. They were very nice to me when I was wanting to wall-to-wall my studio.
The coop is in NYC Manhattan - in Greenwich Village.
You're welcome!
Did you get a good deal in Greenwich Village?
I would look at FLOR.
They have carpet tiles. Some are very nice.
Dear Calvin, I second the carpet tiles at FLOR.
I have been buying from them for years, and now they have storefronts in Manhattan and Brooklyn.
They used to have luxurious materials, now they are mostly eco friendly. I picked up my New Zealand wool tiles from one apartment (bought years ago) and have them stacked right now (in a corner of my drum studio) to be laid out, by me, in our next new space. BTW I'm a 55 year old female and I can haul this stuff myself no problem.
You get these FLOR dots that hold the squares to each other, you do not put any goop on the floor itself. The tiles actually protect the floor. And if things go wrong with red wine or dogs you just pull up the tile, wash it in the sink, let it dry and put it back.
I am just a huge fan of this stuff, obviously. Definitely worth checking out.
ABC Carpet sells remnants and old stock -- the best deals are in the warehouse in the Bronx, but sometimes you can pick up things you'd like at the Manhattan store for a reasonable price.
Thanks for the comments on FLOR and ABC Carpet. Will check them out.
And get ready to haggle at ABC. Make an offer. They are very open to negotiating.
I 2nd Ali.
ABC Carpet's outlet in the bronx has an unbelievable selection of rugs.
I've bought most of my rugs there.
But if you want a really cheap solution, just ferry over to IKEA.
Jeeze Matt your grey too?
Yes forgot to mention you can haggle at the outlet store.
10% for absolute sure, I managed 30% one time.
I talked them down 75% for my bedroom rug.
Yes, truthskr, alas -- I am grey.
Apparently grey is the new black around here.
Bloomingdaales and ABC both have big sales right now on rugs. B: is 75% off, but still cost a tonne. ABC has set prices on come more contemporary rugs, which are good value. But you can get just fine carpets at west elm, CB2 and those places as well.

Yes, if you are cheesy.
And if you don't mind synthetic fibers.
Calvin, are you open to getting a few other estimates? I have a good contact for you. Please shoot me a note at JoseMiranda0112@gmail.com
Forget ABC Carpet's outlet right now.
I went this weekend and Ive never seen inventory this low.
I'm talking 4 or 5 rugs per pile.
CB2 has very small amount of selection.
Matt are you talking about 75% off the list or the already discounted price?
I did buy a lambskin rug that I got down to $599 with an original list of $2800.
But it was discounted down to $899 already.
Gboro, some people are in rentals that they may not see themselves in for more than 1 or 2 years.
Rugs can be very space specific and don't translate well in another space you move to.
I had a very thick pile white carpet I got at Ikea that served it's purpose while renting.
Though Matt's right, the synthetic fibers weren't as comfortable barefoot.
